How to prepare your motorcycles for the rainy season

The rainy season is officially upon us. For motorcycle riders, this not only means preparing extra gear to protect themselves from the elements but also taking some time to make their metal steeds ready to brave the wet weather.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Why is it important to bring a toolkit when riding during the rainy season?

It is portant to bring a toolkit as it will help one get out of sticky situations such as flat tires and loose bolts and screws when riding in the rain.
  • Why is it important to ensure the tires have proper pressure and good treading before riding in rainy weather.

Proper tire tread and pressure as it helps with stability and grip.
  • On that note, we are going to look at a few tips that will not only ensure smoother journeys but also help with one’s safety on the road this monsoon season.

    Prime, protect

It’s important to understand that rain brings not only water but also contains minerals that might affect the paint. In addition, it can also pick up chemicals that could cause corrosion to some of the motorbike’s components. Further, rainwater mixed with dirt and road debris can potentially leave scratches on the two-wheeler’s fairings.

That said, one must consider using protective products to safeguard the motorcycle.

Quick fixes include wax and ceramic coatings. Give the motorcycle a wash using automotive or motorcycle shampoo to remove grime and mud. Then, apply some wax. As for the use of ceramic coating, we suggest taking the bike to a detailer, as a professional would be able to properly and evenly apply the coat, as well as ensure ideal curing times for lasting results.

And speaking of protective products that last, paint protection films (PPF) can provide the best defense due to their ability to save two-wheelers from light scratches and prevent paint discoloration. Like ceramic coatings, it’s best to leave PPF application to the pros.

When it comes to corrosion protection, there are plenty of rust inhibitors on the market that offer decent water-repelling properties to prevent the development of metal corrosion.

    Lubricate parts

Rainwater can wash away a motorcycle’s lubricants. Similarly, passing through puddles can remove oils and fluids that are supposed to help one’s motorcycle run smoothly.

That is why riders are advised to pay attention to the condition of their chains, wires, and other components. There are waterproof lubes, which would be ideal to use during the rainy season.

    Check tire condition

Rain brings with it loose sand and debris, which could cause unnecessary problems for riders.

With that said, it is imperative to ensure that one’s motorcycles have tires with adequate tread depth, as those will provide proper traction, especially in wet conditions. Conversely, worn-out tires can be slippery and might make handling and maneuvering more challenging.

It is also important to check for proper tire pressure. We suggest following the recommended figures specified in the owner’s manual, as the right pressure can help with stability and grip when going over wet roads.

    Inspect brakes

Brakes are more vital when riding in the rain. During these conditions, riders must anticipate reduced friction and traction between the road and their tires. As a result, stopping distances are usually longer. Without properly working brakes, the risk of hitting the vehicle in front becomes higher.

Make sure to inspect the brakes and see to it that the brake pads are not worn out. Further, apply pressure on the brake lever gently, as hitting it hard could cause the bike to spin.

In addition, it is also important to check for any signs of brake fluid leakage. Address it immediately when found, as it can compromise braking performance.

    Check illumination, electrical components

A hot topic among motorists today is the use of hazard lights when driving or riding in heavy rain. Regardless of their stand on the matter, it is obvious that visibility is essential in rainy weather.

That said, we strongly recommend checking the motorcycle’s lighting system before leaving home. Give the headlight switch a flick, as well as the turn signals. Squeeze the brake lever and ensure that the brake light is working properly.

    Bring a toolkit

When riding during the rainy season, it’s important to bring a toolkit as this can help the rider get out of a sticky situation.

In our country, common complaints of riders include running over sharp objects, resulting in a flat tire. Instead of being stuck on the road pushing the motorcycle to a nearby shop, packing a tire patch in the toolkit could get one going in a matter of minutes.

Similarly, having a multi-tool allows one to tighten bolts and nuts immediately, reducing the risk of a breakdown and prolonged exposure o the elements.

It is also important to pack an anti-fog spray, as moisture can build up on the visor, making it hard to ride in wet conditions.

    Final thoughts

These are just a few tips that riders can use before going on the road this rainy season. It is important to make all necessary preparations this season, as it will help one’s trip become more enjoyable and safe.
