Nissan Almera Review 2025

The Nissan Almera is one of the most affordable cars from the Japanese carmaker in the Philippines and is Nissan’s most compact sedan on sale around the world. Based on the Micra hatchback sold overseas, the 2023 Nissan Almera is currently in the facelifted form of its fourth-generation version, which was first introduced in 2020.

In this facelifted avatar, the fourth-generation version of the Nissan Almera received subtle tweaks to its exterior and a few key alterations to its cabin as well. However, much of the features list and powertrain options remained unchanged in the facelift. Also known as Nissan Sunny and Nissan Versa in some parts of the world, the 2023 Nissan Almera is on sale in the Philippines in three different variants – EL, VE and VL.

Nissan Almera Interior & Features

Compared to the previously available third-generation model, the all-new Nissan Almera has evolved with a new-generation layout, which looks much fresher, more youthful and appealing to the eyes. The VE and VL variants come with a door trim layout, with the latter also getting contrast stitching to make the cabin feel more special with higher attention to detailing. While the EL variant misses out on the soft touch finish for the dashboard, the VE and VL variants come with blue-coloured soft touch leather for the middle layer, with the VL variant also featuring contrast stitching like that on the door trim.

The 2023 Nissan Almera also comes with a satin silver finish for the spokes of the steering wheel and surrounds for the AC vents on the corners of the dashboard. The door pads also come with faux carbon finish touches, while the VE and VL variants feature frameless manual day-night inside rearview mirror in addition. The VL variant also comes with leather upholstery with dark blue trim.

Q1 – What is the colour combination for the interior of the updated Nissan Almera?

Answer – The Nissan Almera comes with an all-black interior layout as standard, with the VE and VL variants also featuring a contrast blue finish for the middle layer of the dashboard with a soft-touch finish.

Q2 – Does the interior of 2023 Nissan Almera come with leather upholstery?

Answer – The leather upholstery is offered only in the top-spec VL variant of the Nissan Almera, with the seats also featuring a dark blue trim.

Passenger and boot space

Nissan introduced the concept of offering uncompromised interior space with the third-generation version of the Almera, which somehow got toned down in this new fourth-generation model. All the variants of the 2023 Almera measure 1740mm wide and 1460mm tall, however, while the EL and VE variants measure 4495mm long, the VL variant has a length of 4530mm. The wheelbase of all the variants is 2620mm, which allows an ample amount of knee room and leg room, while the ample width of the sedan is good enough to accommodate five people at their best.

The fourth-generation Nissan Almera also has a boot space of 474 litres, which is decent, but is smaller than what the rivals are offering, and even lesser than the model it replaced. Where the Nissan Almera upped the game compared to its predecessor is the feel from the seats on the inside, which offer better support and comfort. In all the variants, the 2023 Nissan Almera gets height adjustability for the driver’s seat, with the VL variant also featuring a 60:40 split arrangement for the rear seats.

Q1 – What’s the boot space of Nissan Almera?

Answer – The Nissan Almera claims to offer a boot space of 474 litres.

Q2 – Does Nissan Almera come with a powered driver’s seat?

Answer – No, the Nissan Almera misses out on a powered driver’s seat, but it comes with height adjustability for the driver’s seat in all of its variants.

Comfort and entertainment

The three-spoke steering wheel of the 2023 Nissan Almera, which is both tilt and telescopic adjustable, comes with standard audio and Bluetooth controls integrated into it as standard. However, the VE and VL variants also have a meter screen, voice recognition and cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. These two variants also have a more premium instrument console with a 7-inch TFT screen in it, which also serves as MID. In the VL variant, the steering wheel is leather-wrapped.

The EL variant of the 2023 Almera comes with a standard 2-DIN audio system with four speakers, but the VE and VL variants have a more advanced 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility and six speakers. All the variants of the Nissan Almera also come with a 12V power outlet, USB charging slots and automatic climate control, with the top-spec VL variant also having a push start-stop button.

Q1 – Is the sunroof available in Nissan Almera?

Answer – Nissan Almera doesn’t come with a sunroof in any of its variants.

Q2 – What is the infotainment system offered in the Nissan Almera?

Answer – The higher-spec variants of the Almera come with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Almera Exterior

Compared to all the previous generations of the Nissan Almera, this current fourth-generation version has raised the standards with its highly aerodynamic and curvaceous design. Unlike the previous generation models in the history of Almera, this fourth-gen model is heavily based on the Micra hatchback and is nothing but a boot attached to the rear of the Micra. However, the design doesn’t look disproportionate from any angle.

At the front, the 2023 Nissan Almera comes with a low-positioned, widespread Nissan V-Motion grille design, with the facelifted version getting redesigned chrome inserts. Here, the grille now comes with long horizontal slats in the middle and segmented chrome strips on the outer sides. The trapezoidal headlamps here have a sweptback design, with the VE and VL variants getting more premium LED projectors along with daytime running LEDs. The front bumper of these two variants also comes integrated with LED fog lamps with gloss black surrounds.

There is much visual drama even in the side profile of the 2023 Almera, with the sedan having a sharp crease rising from the front fender to the edge of the tail lamp. While the EL variant comes with 15-inch steel wheels, the VE variant has 15-inch alloy wheels, while the VL variant comes with 16-inch machined alloy wheels. In all the variants, the Almera comes with body-coloured door handles and door-mounted rearview mirrors with a sharp and distinctive king rising towards the rear of the window beltline. Electronic adjustability for the mirrors is standard across the lineup, though the power foldability comes in VE and VL variants.

At the back, the 2023 Nissan Almera comes with boomerang-themed combination tail lamps, which feature revised LED inserts that look newer compared to the pre-facelift model. Here, the boot lid has a rather cleaner design with a hexagonal license plate housing. The rear bumper here comes with a body-coloured diffuser at the bottom in all three variants.

Q1 – Does Nissan Almera come with LED light on the outside?

Answer – The Nissan Almera comes with LED headlamps, DRLs and fog lamps in the VE and VL variants, while LED tail lamps are standard across the lineup.

Q2 – What is the wheel size offered in the Nissan Almera?

Answer – The Nissan Almera comes equipped with 15-inch steel wheels in EL, 15-inch alloy wheels in VE and 16-inch machined alloy wheels in VL variants.

Nissan Almera Mileage Running Cost

Nissan has simply hit the ball out of the park with the exceptional fuel efficiency of the 2023 Almera. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine of the Almera delivers 23.3 kmpl with the manual transmission in the EL variant and 23.4 kmpl with the CVT offered in VE and VL variants. With these figures, the 2023 Nissan Almera is ranked as the most fuel-efficient sedan in its class.

Almera Ride & Handling

The aerodynamic design of the 2023 Nissan Almera, along with a taut suspension setup, enables the sedan to have a stabler and more supple ride quality and handling balance compared to the previous-generation versions of the sedan.

The 2023 Almera continues to come with independent Macpherson struts with stabilizer at the front and torsion beam with stabilizer at the rear, which are neither too stiff, nor too soft in their tuning. However, the steering setup is tuned on a lighter side for a more convenient driving experience in the urban environment. The ride quality is composed too, with the VL version having the best setup as it is the only variant here to get larger 16-inch wheels.

Q1 – What is the suspension setup offered in Nissan Almera?

Answer – The Nissan Almera has independent Macpherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear, both of which get stabilizers.

Q2 – Does Nissan Almera come with drive modes?

Answer – There are no drive modes on offer in the Nissan Almera.

Nissan Almera Engine & Fuel Consumption

The fourth-generation Nissan Almera was introduced with an all-new 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine when it debuted back in 2020. In this facelifted iteration, the newly-launched Almera continues to soldier on with this new-generation petrol engine, which is currently the smallest powertrain from Nissan for global markets.

Shared with the Micra hatchback, this 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces 100 PS of maximum power in the 2023 Nissan Almera. The peak power produced is 160 Nm with the manual transmission and 152 Nm with the CVT gearbox. Yes, there are two transmission options offered in the Almera – while the base-spec EL variant comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the VE and VL variants come with a CVT gearbox, which also features an idle start-stop system.

Like most of the smaller turbocharged petrol engines, this 1.0-litre engine also impresses with its mid-range. However, the build-up of power takes a few seconds, which makes its performance in the lower RPMs a bit slower than expected.

Q1 – What is the engine option offered in the 2023 Nissan Almera?

Answer – All the variants of the Nissan Almera come with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 100 PS of power, while the peak torque output is 160 Nm with the manual gearbox and 152 Nm with CVT.

Q2 – What is the transmission option offered in the Nissan Almera?

Answer – The Nissan Almera is being offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox in the EL variant and a CVT in VE and VL variants.

Almera Braking & Safety

All three variants of the 2023 Nissan Almera come equipped with front dual, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, vehicle dynamic control, hill start assist, high-mounted brake stop lamp and ISOFIX mounts for child seats. The VE and VL variants come added with more safety features like around view monitor with moving object detection, forward emergency braking with forward collision warning and cruise control.

There are some additional safety features, which are restricted only in the top-spec VL variant, such as Nissan Connect services, tyre pressure monitoring system, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and high beam assist.

Q1 – How many airbags are there in the Nissan Almera?

Answer – There are six airbags available as standard in the Nissan Almera.

Q2 – Does Nissan Almera come with ADAS?

Answer – The Nissan Almera is available with a few ADAS features like blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, high beam assist and forward emergency braking with forward collision warning, in its top-spec VL variant.

Nissan Almera Verdict

Value for money

Following are the prices of all the variants of the 2023 Nissan Almera:

  • Nissan Almera EL MT – PHP 839,000
  • Nissan Almera VE CVT – PHP 1,059,000
  • Nissan Almera VL CVT – PHP 1,149,000

With a sub-PHP 1,000,000 starting price, the Nissan Almera EL variant is a fantastic value for money, as it is priced similarly to a few smaller hatchbacks on sale. Even the VE and VL variants are reasonably priced for the segment to which the 2023 Almera belongs.

Warranty

Nissan offers a standard warranty package of 3 years/100,000 km (whichever comes earlier) for all the variants of the Almera, in which aspects like mechanical parts, electrical parts, body paint and accessories are covered. There is also an option of extending this warranty up to 5 years/150,000 km (whichever comes earlier), though, for the added 2 years/50,000 km warranty, the body paint and accessories are not covered.

Nissan Almera vs the Competition

Following are the top three compact sedans with which the 2023 Nissan Almera competes in the Philippines:

Nissan Almera vs Honda City – The Honda City is easily the ruler of the segment and has had a solid reputation for a long time. The ever-popular sedan from Honda ranks high with its sense of comfort, refinement and reliability. The current iteration of the City has more space, performance and features on offer than the Almera, which explains its premium pricing over the latter.

Nissan Almera vs Toyota Vios – Another Japanese rival of the Nissan Almera, which is as popular, if not more, as the Honda City is the Toyota Vios. Compared to the City, the Vios looks sharper, but not more than the Almera. However, the Vios has the oldest cabin layout and features list in this company, which makes it a bit outdated in this comparison. Like the Honda City, the Vios also comes with a more refined 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine.

Nissan Almera vs MG 5 – Another rival with a more powerful naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine is the MG 5. Based on a Roewe sedan, the MG 5 looks the most outdated in comparison, with the Almera having a much more modern design and features than the former. However, the performance of MG 5’s engine feels slightly more powerful than the Almera.

Is Nissan Almera worth buying?

With the most aerodynamic and trendy design in its segment, the 2023 Nissan Almera ranks high in desirability when it comes to compact sedans. The design is the most striking in its class, and with all-LED illumination, it looks upmarket too. The same feeling is evoked once you step into the cabin, with the 2023 Almera impressing you with its sense of space and equipment levels. The turbocharged petrol engine, which is the first in the segment of compact sedans, is not as powerful and refined as the larger naturally-aspirated petrol engines, but in no way it feels inferior while on the go.
