Changan Uni-T: bold and classy

It was in 2022 when Changan introduced to the Philippine market the Uni-T. This is one of the two premium models that the brand currently offers under its roster.

The Chongqing-headquartered marque seems to have strong confidence in the nameplate as it continues to retail the vehicle despite the presence of its sibling, the CS55 Plus (which is being offered with a lower price tag).

So, what can the Changan Uni-T give to its would-be buyers? Here’s what we have learned about the compact sport utility vehicle (SUV).

Vehicle specifications

Exterior

The five-seater crossover has the following measurements:

Virtually the same proportions as the CS55 Plus, the Changan Uni-T’s size makes it an ideal city slicker as it can go through the tight streets within the metropolis.

Complementing its proportions is the low roof and bold “Vision V” design language that will surely attract attention.

Among the vehicle’s notable features are:

• Diamond-shaped borderless front grille flanked bordered by the upside-down L-shaped illumination system
• V-shaped rear spoiler with extra-large panoramic glass roof
• Hidden door handles
• 20-inch wheels

However, there is something odd about the Changan Uni-T’s quad exhaust system. While functional, the tips are not connected to the tips seen below the rear bumper.

Interior

The Changan Uni-T’s cabin boasts modern comfort creatures in a clean layout.

Welcoming occupants inside the crossover is a rich mix of black and brushed silver appointments. The red stitches as well as the flat-bottom steering wheel give it an athletic vibe that matches the aggressive exterior.

Buttons and switches are placed where they should be — which gives users an accustomed feel behind the wheel.

It comes with two digital screens (instrument cluster and infotainment system) that shows high resolution output.

While the vehicle is Apple Carplay-ready, Changan has yet to add to the Uni-T an Android Auto connectivity. Aside from that, the wireless charging pad cannot fit relatively-large mobile devices like the Samsung S24 Ultra. It does, however, have a USB port for such cases.

 The center console also holds the modern-looking shifter and the electronic parking brake as well as the button for the auto hold and switch for the drive modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport).

 At the second row, the Changan Uni-T comes with an air-conditioning vent and an additional charging port.

Its space is sufficient (thanks to its high headroom), but the high rear windows somewhat balance the amount of lighting that enters the vehicle. If users want more natural lighting to come in, they can open its glass roof with sunshade.

Powertrain

Under the hood of the Changan Uni-T is a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline fed mill mated to a seven-speed dry clutch transmission.

This combination sends the following numbers:

After being driven around Metro Manila (in relatively-light traffic), then went all the way to Clark in Pampanga and back, the Changan Uni-T was able to do approximately 14 kilometers-per-liter fuel consumption.

Relatively, we would love to see paddle or manual shifters to give drivers more control over the vehicle.

Technologies

Being under the brand’s upscale roster, the Changan Uni-T comes with numerous safety and driver assistive features. These include:

• Lane Keep Assist
• Lane Departure Warning
• Forward and Rear Collision Warning

Pros, cons

Generally, the Changan Uni-T is a serious contender in the local crossover segment and is one of the models that buyers may want to consider.

It has a peppy mill, and the overall design is up-to-date and sporty.

However, as mentioned above, Changan might want to add the Android Auto to its infotainment system, as well as the manual or paddle shifters.

The price of the Changan Uni-T is P1.679 million.
