Here are 5 new motorcycles for Filipinos looking to reduce daily fuel expenses

This year, fuel prices went crazy high due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East that caused petroleum prices to skyrocket globally.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the 3 ICE motorcycles in the list?

They are the Honda Click125, Yamaha Lexi, and Suzuki V-Strom 160.
  • What are the e-motorcycle options for Filipino riders?

They are the VinFast Viper and Chetak C3503.
  • In the Philippines, motorists are dealing with these price hikes, with this week’s increase seeing a P5.68 per liter surge for gasoline and a P4.31 per liter jump for diesel. As such, the cost of fuel per liter for both gasoline and diesel is nearing the P100 per liter mark.

Citing examples from Zigwheels Philippines’ editorial team, a full tank for a Honda BR-V (multi-purpose vehicle) is now around P3,300; approximately P3,000 for a Suzuki Swift (compact hatchback); and a whopping P6,000 for a Mitsubishi Montero Sport (sport utility vehicle).

On that note, it is not difficult to understand why many people consider getting a two-wheeler to alleviate their daily fuel expenses while still having the ability to move from point A to point B.

That said, here are five new motorcycles on the market that can help Filipinos with their daily commutes.

    Updated Honda Click125

Earlier this year Honda Philippines Incorporated updated one of its best-selling small-displacement motorcycles—the Click125

The newest iteration not only offers cosmetic updates and tech, but now boasts a powertrain—previously sourced from Indonesia—built here in the Philippines. Here are some of its engine specifications:

Engine displacement (in cubic centimeters [cc>)

    125

    Maximum power (in horsepower [hp>)

    11

    Maximum torque (in Newton-meters [Nm>)

    11

Fuel economy (in kilometers per liter [kpl>)

    50.3

Not too long ago, the company also released the “Street” trim for the nameplate, with a naked handlebar setup

Here is a quick look at the model:

    Yamaha Lexi

Yamaha Motor Philippines Incorporated rolled out the Lexi this year

    Photos from Jirehl Kent Flores

It is an interesting motorcycle because the Japanese manufacturer basically slapped a 155 cc engine into a 125 cc body, essentially providing would-be owners with a powerful daily two-wheeler.

    Here are its engine specifications:

    Engine displacement (in cc)

    155

    Maximum power (in hp)

    15.1

    Maximum torque (in Nm)

    14.2

    Fuel economy (in kpl)

    Approximately 37-38

Of note, Yamaha Motor Philippines Incorporated has no official fuel rating for the Lexi, but reports from owners state that its 155 cc engine runs around 37 to 38 kilometers per liter.

You may check out our full review of the Yamaha Lexi in the video below:

    Suzuki V-Strom 160

Aside from rising fuel prices, most Filipino motorists also have to brave flooded streets. And what better way to travel the inundated roads of the country than atop an adventure bike.

Sometime in April, Suzuki Philippines Incorporated unleashed the V-Strom 160—a small cc motorcycle clad in a Gundam-esque body.

Its strength lies in its ability to go to places where the basic city scooter can’t. Thanks to its higher ground clearance (160 millimeters), it can be one’s ideal companion for more adventurous routes. And for its engine specifications:

    Engine displacement (in cc)

    162

    Maximum power (in hp)

    14.7

    Maximum torque (in Nm)

    14

    Fuel economy (in kpl)

    46.2

    VinFast Viper

We can’t talk about fuel efficiency without mentioning electric motorcycles, and the top-of-mind brand in this segment is Vietnam’s VinFast.

In its three-model lineup launched in July, arguably the most striking is the Viper, as it looks more like an internal combustion engine model than a fully electric one. Here are its electric motor specifications:

    Number of motors

    One

    Battery type

    lithium iron phosphate

    Battery rating (in kilowatt-hours [kWh>)

    1.5

Top speed (in kilometers per hour)

    90

Range one battery (in kilometers [km>)

    82

    Range two batteries (in km)

    145

Check out our first look at the VinFast Viper in Vietnam in the clip below:

    Chetak C3503

Chetak enters the local electric bike scene with the C3503. However, unlike other e-motorcycles that are designed to be light with a plastic body, the Indian uses solid metal fairings, making it more akin to a Vespa or Lambretta than a VinFast.

    Here are its motor specifications:

    Number of motors

    Battery type

    Maximum power (in hp)

    Range (in km)
