Jaecoo EJ6’s strengths, weaknesses

All-electric SUV is uniquely styled and full of creature comforts

Jaecoo EJ6’s strengths, weaknesses

As a fledgling brand in the Philippine market, Jaecoo made sure to reinforce its position by bringing in crossovers and sport utility vehicles (SUV) - two very popular body styles amongst Filipino buyers.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the price range of the Jaecoo EJ6?

The Jaecoo EJ6 has a price ranging from P1.649 million-P1.799 million.
  • What is the range of the Jaecoo EJ6?

The Jaecoo EJ6 can cover up to 421 kilometers on a single full charge.
  • For its entry into the SUV segment, Jaecoo went big with the all-electric EJ6, a compact five-seater that is touted to provide a good mix of bold styling, off-road capability, and a smooth driving experience.

The aforementioned are just some of the strengths of the Jaecoo EJ 6, but does it have any weaknesses as well? Let’s find out if this model has any compromises. Prior to that, though, let’s go into detail on its strong suits.

    Pros

    Loads of power on tap

The Jaecoo EJ6, particularly the top-spec Premium all-wheel-drive (AWD) trim, offers would-be buyers loads of power. To be more specific, the vehicle’s two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) can generate up to 275 horsepower (hp) and 385 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. The said figures, according to the brand, are enough to propel the EJ6 from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 6.5 seconds.

Additionally, the model has a driving range of 421 kilometers (km), according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). That’s more than enough for out-of-town trips and daily driving within the city.

Topping up the EJ6 is also easy thanks to a direct current (DC) fast-charging system that can deliver up to 80 kilowatts, enabling the vehicle to increase its state-of-charge from 30-80 percent in just 30 minutes. The top-spec variant’s battery, meanwhile, has a capacity of 69.77 kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Ensuring ride quality and stability for the all-electric SUV is a MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension system. It also uses disc brakes for all four wheels.

Notably, the model is also touted to be capable of handling light off-road scenarios thanks to its 32-degree approach and 34-degree departure angles. The model is likewise able to ford water up to 600 millimeters (mm) deep, according to Jaecoo.

The Jaecoo EJ6 also comes with vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, which can be helpful during brownouts. During camping (or glamping) trips, its V2L system can also power small devices, such as small electric cooking appliances.

While its exterior appears ready for the great outdoors, the interior of the Jaecoo EJ6 is definitely ready to pamper its occupants.

For starters, its five-seater layout comes with leather upholstery, with the front seats equipped with power adjustability, ventilation, and a massage function. Everyone inside is also kept cool by an automatic climate control system, while the mood is enhanced with an ambient lighting system and a panoramic sunroof.

For the driver, the model provides the following equipment:

    • Dial-type shifter
    • Electronic parking brake
    • Push-to-start button
    • Drive mode selector
    • 9.2-inch digital gauge cluster
    • Flat bottom and top steering wheel
    • Heated steering wheel

Handling on-board entertainment for the Jaecoo EJ6 is a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The said screen is likewise linked to a 12-piece Infinity sound system, while those on board can top up their devices using a 50-watt wireless smartphone charger and a series of USB ports.

Safety-wise, the model also has what you’d expect from a modern SUV. Some of its notable safety-oriented features include six airbags, stability control, electronic brake-force distribution, a 360-degree view camera, hill-descent control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and tire pressure monitoring - among others.

The aforementioned are supported by a wide array of advanced driver-assist systems, which include, but are not limited to:

    • Adaptive cruise control
    • Autonomous emergency braking
    • Door open warning
    • Forward collision warning
    • Lane keep assist
    • Emergency lane keep assist
    • Rear cross traffic alert
    • Traffic jam assist

    Retro-inspired exterior design

Another strong point of the Jaecoo EJ6 is its appearance. Specifically, it wears a boxy, retro-style design that was clearly inspired by off-road SUV models from yesteryears.

Together with its modern touches, the result is a playful but tough-looking ride that is ready to go on excursions in the city or out to distant places accessible only on dirt roads.

With its very nature as an electric vehicle (EV), however, the EJ6 does get a closed-off grille flanked by inverted L-shaped LED headlamps. Otherwise, it gets all the necessary “tough” details to a tee, through its chunky front and rear bumpers, its bulging wheel arches, and its high-riding stance that offers up to 225 mm of ground clearance

Apart from its exterior styling cues, the model was also equipped with a load-bearing roof, complete with roof rails, a set of 19-inch alloy wheels, power-folding and adjustable side mirrors, as well as front fog lamps. Also accentuating the SUV are black plastic claddings that are all spread around its lower sections.

With all that said, the model looks like a solid brick of steel. It isn’t too aerodynamic-looking, but it does get flush door handles that pop out when the vehicle is unlocked.

    Cons

    Heavily dependent on touchscreen

Like many other modern vehicles we’ve discussed before, the one weakness of the Jaecoo EJ6 is its heavy reliance on its touchscreen. The model has only a few physical controls, and most in-vehicle toggles and functions can only be accessed on its touchscreen display.

Sure, the EJ6’s touchscreen has a good user interface, but having actual knobs and buttons will be safer for most drivers. They are just easier to manipulate without having to divert ones attention from the road, after all.

    Final thoughts

On paper, the Jaecoo EJ6 is a strong contender in the all-electric SUV category. Plenty will like its boxy styling, its richness of creature comforts, and especially its abundance of safety gear.

Sure, the model is a bit pricey, but electric-powered SUV nameplates remain a niche market in the Philippines right now. Those priced below the EJ6 are mostly crossovers, after all.

So, for those who like what they see in this boxy ride, do visit the nearest Jaecoo dealership for a test drive. Who knows, this might just be the right car for you to finally jump into the world of electric mobility.
