BMW brings XM PHEV to Malaysia

MANILA: BMW Malaysia has confirmed the launch of the BMW XM, the first M model to be driven by a plug-in hybrid powertrain, in June.

The series production of the BMW XM started in December 2022 at the BMW Group's Spartanburg facility in USA.

The BMW XM will be offered in two trim levels: the Shadow Line and the Night Gold Line. The only difference between the two variants is the gold-colored accent/upper window line trim, rear apron, and wheel contrast finish on the Night Gold Line.

The BMW XM measures 5,110mm long, 2,005mm wide, and 1,755mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 3,105mm and a boot capacity of 527 liters.

As mentioned, the BMW XM is the first M series model to be equipped with a plug-in hybrid engine. It runs on a combination of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. The former is a new 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine with a maximum power of 489hp and a maximum torque of 650Nm. The electric motor, on the other hand, not only boosts efficiency but also gives the car's M performance aura an added dimension.

The total output is 653hp and 800Nm of torque. The power is transmitted to the wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission.

The BMW XM can accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 250kph. With the M Driver's package, it increases to 270kph and the electronic top speed is capped at 140kph. The BMW XM can go 88km on electric power alone.

The package also includes a flap-controlled sports exhaust system, Intelligent M xDrive all-wheel drive system, basic 4WD setting, 4WD Sport mode, M Hybrid technology, and a 29.5kWh battery pack with a 7.4kW AC charger.

In terms of exterior design, the BMW XM comes with adaptive LED headlights with high-beam assistant, a large kidney grille with hallmark M horizontal double louvers, split lighting units with modules for daytime running lights (DRLs) and low/high beams, a sloping roofline, 23-inch M light-alloy wheels, and twin hexagonal tailpipes.

The BMW XM has a cozy interior that is packed with features for comfort and convenience. Customers can choose among four upholstery options: Leather Merino Deep Lagoon with vintage leather, Leather Merino Silverstone with vintage leather, Leather Merino Black, and Leather Merino Sakhir Orange.

Other interior features include a BMW curved display with information display and  high-resolution touchscreen control display, M leather steering wheel, M seatbelts, M multifunction seats, active seat ventilation, four-zone automatic air-conditioning control, massage function on driver and front passenger seats, ambient light, BMW Iconic Sounds Electric, and Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System.

The BMW XM comes with a set of M Sport brakes. The actual braking performance uses regenerative braking.

The Adaptive M Suspension comes with steel springs as standard, instead of the usual air suspension, ensuring a smooth drive.

The BMW XM is available in seven colors: Cape York Green, Carbon Black, Marina Bay Blue, Toronto Red, Mineral White, Black Sapphire, and Dravit Grey. It retails for RM1,398,800.
