BYD provides mild updates to UK-spec Seal

MANILA: BYD has provided a mild update to the Seal all-electric sedan in the United Kingdom. For the large part, the UK-spec model still has the same capacities (output and range) as the Philippine-spec model, but some of its changes have to do with styling and practicality. 

For starters, the BYD Seal’s maximum boot capacity was increased from 400 liters to 485 liters. This section of the car also gained cargo hooks. Moreover, the vehicle’s “frunk,” or front trunk, now boasts 72 liters - a significant increase from the pre-updated version’s 53 liters. 

As of this writing, the Chinese new energy vehicle conglomerate hasn’t disclosed how it accomplished these, but the aforementioned increase in usable cargo space is a huge boon for those using the Seal as a daily driver. 

Some use-case points for the updated Seal, as BYD shared, include storing the car’s charging cables in the front trunk instead of the rear.

Furthermore, BYD equipped the UK-spec Seal with new 19-inch wheels, which appear to have a different style from the Philippine-spec version’s. It also gained new, livelier color options, namely Ruby Red, Lavender Gray, and Obsidian Black. In comparison, the current Philippine market version comes in Aurora White, Arctic Blue, Atlantis Gray, and Cosmos Black. 

Inside the updated sedan is a “sleeker” interior with the BYD logo now gone from the car’s front seat headrests. Also omitted was the “NFC” logo on the center console, although it still retains NFC-reading capacity. Interestingly, BYD also removed the car’s 15.6-inch infotainment system's rotating function. 

In terms of tech, the updated UK-spec BYD Seal’s advanced driver-assist system (ADAS) suite was enhanced with a driver monitoring system. Likewise added to the updated EV is a Bluetooth key system, allowing users to utilize their smartphones as a keyless entry system. 

For now, BYD Cars Philippines has not yet announced whether the updated Seal will reach the Philippine market. The current version, however, remains a relatively accessible model given its performance.

BYD Seal: PH specs, price

In the Philippines, the BYD Seal is offered with a suggested retail price ranging from P1.998 million-P2.548 million. 

The top-spec Performance trim is capable of producing a total of 521 horsepower (hp) and 672 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque from two motors (front and rear). It also has a range of 580 kilometers according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), and a fast-charging capability of 30-80 percent in just 30 minutes. 

Just like most BYD electric vehicle (EV) models sold locally, the Seal also has regenerative braking and a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.
