KEY TAKEAWAYS
How can the Chery Tiggo V transform into a pickup truck?
According to Chery, the Tiggo V can transform into a pickup truck via a removable rear roof. What is the powertrain of the Chery Tiggo V?
No exact specs were given, but the Chery Tiggo V will be available as an internal combustion model or as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.Per the brand, the Tiggo V is a family-oriented sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was designed with versatility, which is seen from its ability to meet the expectations buyers want from both an SUV, multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), and even pickup trucks.
As the brand explains, the Chery Tiggo V inherently comes with the characteristics of an SUV and an MPV. Appearance-wise, it has a tough-looking, squarish profile, wearing a tall, imposing “Tiger Roar” V-shaped grille flanked by a pair of “Tiger Claw” LED headlamp clusters. It also comes with a high-riding roof, tall wheel arches, and a blocky rear end that mirrors the styling of its front fascia.
Its MPV qualities are evident in its interior, which offers ample comfort and space through its three-row, seven-seater layout. The aforementioned part of the car was fitted with captain seats with sliding adjustment and even a “bed mode” in which both the second and third rows can be folded down to form a flat surface ideal for relaxing or even sleeping.

The model’s “pickup truck mode,” however, is rarely seen on Chinese-manufactured cars. This is because it can become a handy cargo-carrying adventure vehicle by simply removing the rear section of its roof. Doing so, Chery says, is done easily via a quick detachment system and the vehicle’s large tailgate.
For now, Chery has yet to disclose whether the pickup truck mode allows driving with the third row in place, or if one must remove it. It was confirmed, however, that the car does get a barrier of sorts to separate its “bed” from the main cabin while in pickup truck mode.
Notably, the Chery Tiggo V is a unibody model, so we can’t expect it to be capable of hardcore off-roading. Nevertheless, the one displayed at Auto China 2026 does appear to have all-terrain tires.

With those capabilities, it might be able to handle light off-roading scenarios or even glamping duties.
Again, no full specs for the Chery Tiggo V were disclosed as of its appearance at Auto China 2026, but it was reported to use the Chery Super Hybrid system, which is capable of achieving up to 16.6 kilometers per liter in fuel consumption for the PHEV version.
Other notable features of the Chery Tiggo V that were revealed during its debut at the said event mostly cover its advanced driver-assist systems suite, which includes, but is not limited to:
- Forward Collision Warning
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Automatic parking assist
- Remote parking assist
We can expect that the Chinese market will get first dibs on the Chery Tiggo V. On the one hand, would you want to see this unique three-row ride reach our shores as well?
