Chevrolet’s Teen Driver mode doesn’t let one shift until he/she buckle up

MANILA: No matter how many safety features your car boasts, if you do not put the seat belt on, only a miracle can save. And miracles don’t happen every day, do they? None of the advanced automatic braking system, vehicle stability control, ABS,

or other features will come at your rescue if you’re not wearing a seat belt. To prevent casualties of such sort and make sure that the driver is wearing a seat belt, GM Motors has come up with a very clever and interesting feature on Chevrolet and other cars.

So, how does this thing work? Well, the new mechanism is rather simple. What it does is - it doesn’t let the driver put the car into gear until he or she has put the seat belt on. So, if the driver hasn’t buckled up, the car shows a message on the instrument cluster saying, “Buckle Seat Belt To Shift”.

Part of the GM's Teen Driver system, the mechanism comes along other features like speed limiter, using which, parents can set a cap on the top speed at 85 mph (about 140 kmph). Moreover, parents can even pre-define the maximum volume level.

While the Teen Driver mode is on, the stability control is always on and set to the most aggressive settings. At the end of a ride, the mechanism can also share a report card with the parents with the number of times the teen driver hit the top speed warning along with the number of times the stability control was triggered. No, the driver cannot disable the system as it is secured with a PIN lock, just in case you were wondering.

We must say GM Motors has done a commendable job here with the new “Teen Driver” system. However, it is not only the teens who do not wear a seat belt and cross the speed limits. We hope the automaker puts the mechanism on more and more vehicles as a standard feature. Adults should also know their responsibilities, shouldn’t they? For now, the likes of Chevrolet Malibu, Colorado, Traverse, and GMC Canyon has been equipped with the new system.
