Ferrari Receives 2016 International Engine of the Year Award

MANILA: Ferrari, the elite Italian automaker, now has a big reason to smile and celebrate. In the recently held International Engine of the Year Award, Ferrari received appreciation and award for its 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. This engine powers the Ferrari 488 GTB which was launched in the Philippines in December 2015. With this engine, the company has finally received its debut International Engine of the Year award. The best part is that apart from this title, this twin-turbo V8 power mill also won the honors in the 'Performance Engine' and 'New Engine' categories.

The award ceremony was organised in Germany and 63 motors journalists hailing from 31 countries around the world judged the engines in 12 different categories. While the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine of Ford received the award in the category of 'Sub 1-litre' category for the 5th time in the row, Tesla received 'Green Engine' award for the third time for its full electric powertrain. This engine is used in the Tesla S and X models and given to the engine, which is not only economical but also environment-friendly. Apart from these, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Audi and Porsche also got an opportunity to receive awards for their engines in a different category. In all the 12 categories, Ferrari is the one, which has received a maximum number of awards for its engines, now we know what make these supercars so furious.

In the 1-litre to 1.4-litre category, PSA Peugeot Citroen was awarded for its 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo unit for the second time. This award was earlier imprinted by the German giant Volkswagen for 9 consecutive years. In the bigger engine – 1.8-litre to 2.0-litre category, Merc was awarded for its 2.0-litre turbo unit which it houses in the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and A45 AMG cars. This was has been grabbed for the second time by this company in the same category. Next comes Audi in the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category where it remained dominant for the 6th time, defeating Porsche with its 2.5-litre engine by a hairline margin in performance, with its 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo engine packed in RS Q3, TT and TT RS.

Though Porsche had to taste defeat in this segment but in the bigger engine segment where 2.5-litre to 3.0-litre engines were judged, it made it with its new 3.0-litre 6-cylinder powertrain equipped in 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera 4. This time, Porsche defeated the 'Big German 3' labelled BMW, which won this award for whopping 14 times. In 3.0-litre to 4.0-litre engines, Ferrari 3.9-litre V8 was the winner and in the last category where above 4.0-litre capacity engines were judged, Ferrari again made it with its 6.3-litre V12 power mill which masters the F12tdf. Overall, Ferrari won 4 awards in the ceremony of which 3 were for the same engine. Ferrari, congratulations & well done, keep making us proud!
