Honda confirms next-gen Prelude, 0 series arrival to PH

MANILA: Local Honda fanboys, you may want to start saving up as the company is set to introduce the next-generation Prelude to the Philippine market.

The aforementioned goal was revealed by Honda Cars Philippines Incorporated (HCPI) President Rie Miyake during a chance interview at the Japan Mobility Show.

Although confirming about the company’s move to bring the liftback coupe to the local market, the company helm did not reveal a particular timeline for its local unveiling.

“Soon,” Miyake told Zigwheels Philippines, pertaining to the model’s local debut.

Such a move seems to be inevitable as the Civic Type R — as reported last September —is already down to its final units.

To recall, the Japanese automaker decided to bring back to life one of its iconic nameplates (which is now on its sixth generation) last September — some 24 years after it was discontinued in 2001.

Here are some bits about the Honda Prelude that is now being retailed in its home country.

Honda Prelude

On paper, the car tapes in at:

The coupe features flowing proportions that link the low and sharp front fascia to the roofline. Complementing designs include sharp-looking front illumination, hidden door handles, “connected” taillamps), and 19-inch wheels.

For its cabin, the car offers sporty front seats with low side support, leather appliques on the dash and door panel, dual digital screens, and an Alcantara leather-covered flat-bottom steering wheel.

Now created as a hybrid electric vehicle, the next-generation Honda Prelude is equipped with the next-generation Sports e:HEV, which is the combination of a two-liter direct inject engine and two motors. This powertrain design allows the sports car to do 23.6 kilometers per liter consumption (based on Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle standards).

Aside from that, a stock Honda Prelude can reach a top speed of around 188 kilometers per hour, thanks to the engine and electric motors’ churns of as much as:

The drivetrain is mated to Honda’s bespoke S+ Shift technology that simulates virtual gear changes, combined with the instant electrified acceleration of a full hybrid. It also has paddle shifters on the steering wheel that gives manual control.

In the United Kingdom (where it will be officially introduced later this week), the Honda Prelude is being offered for £40,995 (approximately P3.16 million).

O Series

Aside from that, Miyake shared that HCPI will also bring in the 0 series (which was also revealed at the event). However, the company leader mentioned that its debut will take place after the launch of the Prelude.

While it would be a welcome development if Honda will introduce all three offerings under the series (Alpha, Saloon, and SUV), Zigwheels Philippines has a hunch that the badge would enter the local market by competing in the crossover category.

Moreover, since the vehicle is still in the prototype stage, we might be waiting for at least a year or two before it enters production stage.

Here’s what the Honda 0 Alpha prototype comes with as seen at the brand's display area.

Up front, the headlights, charging lid, and illuminated emblem are integrated into its grille area and its hind boasts U-shaped lighting that combines the tail lamps, backup lamps, and turn signal lamps — accentuating the vehicle’s shape for its rear.

Per the Tokyo-headquartered company, this layout helps the electric vehicle (EV) achieve a design that is visually and functionally refined.
