Hyundai showcases 2-stage motor system

MANILA: Hyundai Motor Group has highlighted its Two-Stage Motor System that propels all of its N high-performance electric vehicle (EV) models, the Hyundai Ioniq 9, Kia EV6 GT, Kia EV9, and Kia EV9 GT.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Which models are currently using Hyundai Motor Corporation’s Two-Stage Motor System?

Models that use Hyundai’s Two-Stage Motor System include the N series of cars, Hyundai Ioniq 9, Kia EV6 GT, as well as the Kia EV9 and Kia EV9 GT.
  • What are the three main components of Hyundai’s Two-Stage Motor System?

The main components of Hyundai’s Two-Stage Motor System are the inverter, motor, and reducer.
  • According to the conglomerate, the Two-Stage Motor System has managed to provide a balance of high performance and efficiency - representing a major innovation in EV engineering. The aforementioned is also touted as a major selling point for all-electric mobility since it can give users a more engaging drive without compromising sustainability.

As the South Korean corporation shared, its Two-Stage Motor System comprises three components listed below:

    • Inverter: responsible for converting direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) for the motor
    • Motor: generates rotational force
    • Reducer: sends power made by the motor to the wheels

Particular focus during development was given by Hyundai to the inverter, which features 12 semiconductor switches in a “six plus six” plug configuration. The aforementioned is double the amount of semiconductors compared to inverters from other manufacturers.

One set of semiconductors (one set of six) uses silicon carbide for higher efficiency, while the other set is made out of silicon to “support high-power conditions.” The result allows for a 70 percent higher voltage supply to the motor.

On the efficiency side, the said powertrain works on in-house developed control algorithms that intelligently switch between its in-city driving modes and high-performance modes. This is called Hyundai’s “smart dual-mode control.”

To put this into perspective, the Philippine-spec Hyundai Ioniq 5 N can put out 600 horsepower and 740 Newton-meters of torque. But despite its beefy output, it can still provide a driving range of 448 kilometers from a single full charge.

As Hyundai shared further, it also designed its inverter to be more compact. This was achieved thanks to its in-house developed power module design.

In total, the Two-Stage Motor System contains nine modules integrated into three. The aforementioned manages to save on weight and is said to have improved its durability.

Considering the amount of power coming from a typical Hyundai N model’s powertrain, the manufacturer also equipped the system with a double-sided cooling component for increased heat dissipation.
