Mazda Working on New Rotary Engine

MANILA: The rotary engine has some life more to live as the Mazda president Masamichi Kogai has confirmed that the company is currently working on to develop a new rotary motor with a hope that it should meet the current emission and fuel standards. The last time rotary engine was mass produced was in Mazda RX-8 sports model which featured a front wheel drive configuration and later declared as dead in 2012 because the engine didn’t meet the emission standards.

Kogai stated that Mazda has a dedicated team of engineers who are focused to improve the rotary engine. The team is working enthusiastically but will not bring back the rotary power unless it is able to qualify today's standards. With exact improvements in dark, reduced CO2 emissions and more torque at low revs are expected.

Moreover, Kogai announced that the new rotary engine or RX-8 successor may arrive somewhere in 2018 as it will mark the 40th anniversary of original RX-7. It may also show up in the year 2020 as it marks Mazda's 100th anniversary. If to believe the previous reports, Mazda has been working on a rotary-powered sports coupe which will be derived from Mazda6 but will come as an independent mid-size sedan.
