Is the next-gen Mazda CX-5 PH launch nearing?
DOE also approved current CX-30 as an HEV model
MANILA: Mazda Philippines may launch the all-new CX-5 soon. This was hinted at by the Department of Energy, which has approved the said model as a hybrid, specifically under its “M1” category.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What are the variants of the upcoming next-generation Mazda CX-5?
According to the DOE EV database, the next-generation Mazda CX-5 will come as the 2.5 AT FWD HEV and the top-spec 2.5 AT AWD HEV Premium Plus. What other Mazda model was approved by the DOE as a new energy vehicle?
The DOE has also approved the Mazda CX-30 as a hybrid electric vehicle. So, aside from the presumed imminent launch of a next-generation model, this is practically a milestone for Mazda’s local arm, since its lineup of “mild hybrids” has historically not received a nod from the aforementioned government agency. With this approval from the DOE, however, the upcoming iteration of the CX-5 will be coding-free, as pursuant to the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA Law / Republic Act No. 11697).

Notably, the DOE entry for the next-generation Mazda CX-5 indicates that it will enter the local market with two variants: the 2.5 AT FWD HEV and the 2.5 AT AWD HEV Premium Plus. We can assume that the latter will be the top-of-the-line variant.
It was likewise shown on the said database that the upcoming electrified crossover will be powered by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine that’s paired with an electric motor, a 0.21 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, and an all-wheel-drive layout (Premium Plus).
Screenshot from Department of EnergyDOE’s EV list also disclosed that the upcoming model will have the following dimensions:
|
Length (in millimeters) |
4,690 |
|
Width (in mm) |
1,860 |
|
Height (in mm) |
1,892 |
|
Wheelbase length (in mm) |
2,272 |
With these figures, it appears that the upcoming CX-5 is significantly larger than the current locally available model. This promises better space and possibly even better trunk capacity.
On the one hand, not much details about the next-gen CX-5 were disclosed in the DOE electric vehicle (EV) database, but in global markets, the model produces up to 177 horsepower (hp) and 242 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.
For now, Mazda Philippines has not yet officially announced the exact launch date for the next-generation CX-5, so stay tuned.
Mazda CX-30
Apart from the upcoming Mazda CX-5, the current version of the CX-30 was also included in DOE’s list of approved electrified vehicles.

Propelling the Mazda CX-30 is a 2.0-liter hybrid engine that can put out 162 hp and 213 Nm of torque.
