GWM signs strategic partnership with automotive safety giant Autoliv

MANILA: Great Wall Motor has signed a “Global Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement” with Sweden-based Autoliv, one of the world’s largest automotive safety suppliers, and is currently ranked as a company in the Fortune 500. 

According to GWM, this will provide the company with a significant boost in global supply chain integration and technological synergy. The second of these two points is of particular importance, since GWM itself places a strong emphasis on automotive safety. 

The aforementioned was made evident when Zigwheels Philippines visited the GWM headquarters in Baoding, Hebei, China earlier this year. This showcased the car manufacturer’s robust in-house capabilities when it comes to crash testing, dedicated new energy vehicle safety development, electromagnetic compatibility testing, and many other cutting-edge in-house test procedures. 

As a sign of confidence in the said partnership, Autoliv’s Chief Executive Officer Mikael Bratt has officially become a GWM customer. Specifically, he purchased a GWM Wey G9 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) for his personal travels.

GWM Wey G9: specs, features

For those curious, the GWM Wey G9 MPV that Mikael Bratt purchased is classed as a premium seven-seater nameplate. Propelling the model is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system comprised of a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, two electric motors, and an all-wheel-drive system. 

At maximum, the GWM Wey G9 can produce up to 442 horsepower and 642 Newton-meters of torque. This can result in an estimated zero-to-100-kilometer-per-hour acceleration time of just 5.7 seconds. 

Additionally, the model can provide a full electric range of 170 kilometers (km), according to the New European Driving Cycle. Its total combined range, meanwhile, exceeds 1,000 km. 

While its powertrain sounds impressive, the business end of the GWM Wey G9, however, is its plush interior. 

Specifically, its three-row layout features Nappa leather “Zero Gravity” captain's-seat second-row seats with ventilation and massage functions. Added conveniences include a built-in refrigerator, fold-out tray tables, and a 21-piece speaker set. 

Other noteworthy equipment inside includes a 14.6-inch infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 50-watt wireless charging pad, a triple-zone automatic climate control system, and a 64-color ambient lighting system - among others. 

For now, GWM Philippines, under the distributorship of Luxuriant Automotive Group Incorporated, has yet to announce whether it will bring the GWM Wey G9 MPV to the local market. 

On paper, though, this nameplate could prove a promising future addition, as the local electrified MPV segment has quickly gained ground in recent years.

Autoliv is known for its automotive safety systems. To be exact, the company’s profile says it manufactures and develops airbags, seatbelts, and steering wheels for “all major automotive manufacturers in the world.” 

Apart from being a business, Autoliv is also committed to “saving more lives.” In fact, the Swedish company has set upon itself a challenge to up the ante when it comes to mobility safety, while keeping its operations and products sustainable. As estimated by the company, its products have already spared 40,000 lives and reduced around 600,000 injuries in 2025 alone. 

To accomplish this, the company operates as a global entity with 64,000 colleagues in 25 countries. It also has 13 technical centers and 20 test tracks worldwide.
