Pres. Marcos Jr. wants officials to stop using sirens, blinkers

MANILA: President Ferdinand Marcos Junior has issued an order that prohibits public officials and personnel from using sirens, blinkers, dome lights, and other similar signaling or flashing devices.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What Administrative Order prohibits government officials and employees from using signaling and flashing devices?

Administrative Order No. 18 prohibits government officers and employees from using signaling and flashing devices.
  • What vehicles are allowed to use signaling and flashing devices?

Per the Administrative Order, only motor vehicles designated for official use by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police, fire trucks, hospital ambulances, and other emergency vehicles can use signaling and flashing devices.
  • The directive was due to “traffic disruptions” and “unsafe road and traffic environment” created by the unauthorized and indiscriminate use of signaling and flashing devices.

    Administrative Order No 18

Per Administrative Order No. 18, those allowed to use the abovementioned devices — in clearly appropriate circumstances — are motor vehicles designated for official use by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police, fire trucks, hospital ambulances, and other emergency vehicles.

On that note, unauthorized and improper use of signaling and flashing devices by government officials and employees will merit penalties based on applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Further, the said Administrative Order tasks the Department of Transportation to review, evaluate, and update existing policies and guidelines relating to the improper use of signaling and flashing devices.

To recall, the late President Benigno Aquino III has imposed a similar policy during his administration.
