Renault, Nissan mark 15th year of Alliance's production plant in India

MANILA: Renault and Nissan are celebrating the 15th anniversary of their state-of-the-art production facility in Chennai, India.

Over 15 years, Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) has manufactured over 2.5 million vehicles from the two brands for local and export markets.

Established in 2008, RNAIPL is the first dedicated global manufacturing facility for the Renault Nissan Alliance. It produced its first car, a Nissan Micra, in 2010.

RNAIPL was able to produce 100,000 vehicles in its first year of operations. On average, it produces one car every three minutes. 20 Renault and Nissan models were manufactured at the facility.

RNAIPL achieved its 500,000 production milestone in 2013 and its one-million milestone in 2016. As of July 2023, the plant has produced over 2.5 million vehicles.

RNAIPL was also the first vehicle manufacturer to use Kamarajar Port for car export. Over 1.15 million vehicles manufactured in RNAIPL were exported to 108 countries.

In the next few years, the facility will be manufacturing six new models, including two electric vehicles, as part of the USD 600-million investment of the Alliance in India.

RNAIPL also aims to be carbon neutral by 2025. To achieve this, the facility is now acquiring 60% of its energy from renewable sources. 85% of its water needs are sourced from harvested rainwater as it targets to become water-positive by 2030.

In its 15 years of operations, RNAIPL has also organized corporate social responsibility initiatives that benefited over 100,000 people in local communities.
