Toyota Raize shares similarities with Daihatsu Rocky

MANILA: A pamphlet for the new Toyota Raize compact SUV has been leaked ahead of its debut, and it looks eerily similar to Daihatsu Rocky, which was unveiled AT the Tokyo Motor Show 2019.

The Raize is Toyota’s version of the Daihatsu SUV. Both vehicles share the same body panels based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture(DNGA), underpinnings, engine, and some interior details.

In terms of dimensions, the Rocky is 3,995mm long, 1,695mm tall, 1,620mm wide, and has a 2,525mm wheelbase, which you would also expect on the Raize. This will put it in direct competition with the likes of Suzuki Vitara, Ford EcoSport, Honda BR-V, Mazda CX-3, and Subaru XV.

Design-wise, the exterior of the Raize sports a dominant hexagonal front grille with mesh inserts in a black finish that looks like a smaller version of the RAV4 SUV. This is flanked by sharp intakes, which cases the fog lamps and LED DRLs. On top of the grille sits the Toyota insignia. The side profile gets a bit of curve appeal while the back of the car showcases large tail-lamps and angular bumper design. The slim LED headlights, the contrasting float-roof, and 17-inch alloy wheels, albeit with different designs, are another striking design-features of the Raize that are similar to Daihatsu Rocky.

Inside, the Raize uses the same in-cabin portfolio like the center-mounted, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a hexagonal theme that continues with the AC vents, and the three-spoke multi-function steering wheel.

Under the hood, the Toyota Raize is powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, 12-valve turbo-petrol engine capable of producing 98 hp of power at 6,000rpm and 138 Nm of torque at 2,400-4,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a CVT automatic gearbox, and the power will be sent to the front wheels. An all four-wheel-drive version and a 6-speed MT option would be introduced at a later date.
