VinFast PH to bolster lineup with VF 8?

MANILA: VinFast Philippines appears to be adding another nameplate to its stable in the form of the VF 8.

The all-electric crossover has turned up on the Department of Energy’s list of approved electric vehicles (EV) for the Philippine market, hinting at its possible entry into the local new-energy vehicle segment.

On that note, here is a quick look at what the VinFast VF 8 offers to Filipino car buyers:

Powertrain

Propulsion for the VinFast VF 8 comes from an electric motor at the front wheel axle. Juiced by a 60.13 kilowatt-hour battery, it does about 227 horsepower and 330 Newton-meters of torque with an estimated range of 500 kilometers under the New European Driving Cycle standard. 

Braking power comes from ventilated discs at the fore and solid disc brakes at the rear. Suspension-wise, it uses independent MacPherson struts at the front and multi-link trailing arm shocks at the back.

Fit, finish

Outside, the VinFast VF 8 gets LED illumination, a clean-looking fascia, a set of 19-inch wheels with 235/50-series tires, a manual tailgate, and the typical cladding found on crossovers. 

The cabin boasts a multi-functional steering wheel and seats wrapped in vegan leather, an automatic air conditioning system, a 12.9-inch infotainment system, and six speakers.

Safety

Safety features include lane assistance, collision warnings, standard parking assistance, and adaptive cruise control.

Possible competition 

Without the price, it would be hard to tell at which segment or price point the upcoming VinFast VF 8 will compete.

But it will likely face staunch opposition from the likes of Chinese-made vehicles such as the BYD Atto 3, Geely EX5, and event the Kia EV5.
