MANILA: In line with recent discussions on the child restraint system for vehicles, Volvo Philippines is encouraging motorists to check out the Volvo Children & Cars Safety Manual, which can be accessed for free through Volvo Philippines’ official website.

The safety of the occupants has always been the number-one priority of Volvo in every vehicle that Swedish company manufactures. In 1959, Volvo introduced the three-point seatbelt to the world. After five years, the brand started to integrate rearward-facing child seats in its vehicles. Up until today, Volvo has continued to develop remarkable child car seat concepts to further enhance the protection of their child passengers.

As one of the pioneers in developing car safety features, Volvo finds it alarming that road traffic injuries are the leading cause of child deaths around the world. The carmaker revealed that most cases of death and injuries usually involve completely unrestrained children or incorrectly fitted child seats.

In the manual, Volvo highlights the importance of choosing a child seat that is suitable for the child’s age, height, and weight. Also included are installation guidelines to help the parents in properly fixing a child seat in the vehicle. Volvo Cars Safety Center Senior Technical Leader for Injury Prevention Dr. Lotta Jakobsson stated, “We understand that many people find child safety in cars a complex and sometimes confusing subject. We have focused for many years on communicating clear guidelines around how child seats should be used and the correct way to install them.”

For more than four decades, Volvo has been conducting a unique study to increase the child safety level inside the vehicle. The research team is using crash-test dummies to evaluate the performance of a child seat in an event of a collision. The study showed that rearward-facing child seats must be used for children below four years old.

According to Dr. Jakobsson, “Children up to four need to travel rearward-facing in cars, simply because their neck is too weak to support the head. You, therefore, need to protect them. We need to communicate this message to everybody, so they understand the importance of having the children rearward-facing because if they end up in high-severity frontal impact, it’s a question of life and death.”
