Volvo reports best Jan. ever in global sales

MANILA:  Volvo Cars began 2021 strongly as it attained the best January in its entire history, with the US, China, and Europe reporting continuous sales growth.

Global sales grew by 30.2% to 59,588 vehicles, driven by exceptional year-on-year results in China, where the company was able to regain losses due to previous COVID-19 lockdowns.

The demand for the SUV range of Volvo Cars remained high and accounted for 71% of total volume, as the popularity of its Recharge range of vehicles continuously increased.

The number of Recharge models was twice the amount in January year-on-year, which currently represents 23% of all Volvo cars sold worldwide.

In China, sales went up by a huge 91.3% to 19,160 vehicles in January, as the largest market of Volvo Cars was able to bounce back from pandemic-related decrease in sales in January 2020.

The sales growth in China was driven by high total market demand, and was also influenced by a rise in sales of the auto brand’s S60 saloon and the XC40 compact SUV.

US sales hit 8,151 vehicles in January — a rise of 32.4% compared to the same time in 2020.

The well-recognized SUV lineup of the company, which is led by the XC90, resulted in a strong sales growth.

European sales for the month rose by 9.0% to 24,857 vehicles sold, due to good results in major markets like the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden. Recharge cars accounted for 41% of overall European sales.

In January 2021, the XC40 was the best-selling model of the company, with 17,770 vehicles sold (2020: 10,802 units).

The XC60 was second with 17,053  vehicles (2020: 13,353 units) followed by the XC90 with sales reaching 7,564 vehicles (2020: 6,902 units).
