What if Toyota and Porsche bring back the MR2?
MANILA: The all-new second-generation Toyota GR Supra is one of the most popular cars in the arena right now. Perhaps, it is the sheer love for sports cars that the population possesses that has given the Supra all the limelight. Moreover, we also can't deny the fact that the Supra, even in its first-generation,
was a car that enthusiasts craved for as much as they do for the newest iteration. So, the Supra has always been right up there in the hearts of the devotees. But do you know the guy behind the all-new Supra? It is none other than the Toyota Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada.
Tetsuya Tada is the very person who worked with Subaru to revive the 86, and now, he has done it again with the A90 Supra. The world knows that Toyota worked in tandem with BMW for bringing back the Supra. Some say that it was done to reduce costs, however, if Toyota had worked on the new Supra all on its own, the Japanese sports icon couldn't have come out of the facilities before 2021.
Furthermore, Toyota had already stopped producing straight engines back in time following the discontinuation of the 2JZ. Hence, the partnership with BMW enabled the Japanese automaker to benefit from the German friend's rear-wheel-drive chassis engineering, turbocharged straight-six engine, and much more.
Following the successful revivals of the Toyota GR Supra and Toyota 86, could Toyota and Tetsuya Tada work with another automaker and bring one more icon back to life? Well, the dream could indeed become a reality in the future. During an interview at the press drive of the all-new Toyota GR Supra in Sportsland Sugo in Miyagi, Japan,
Tada stated that he would want to work in conjunction with Porsche and revive the MR. The MR was a legend in its times and ruled the roads for good 23 years before Toyota shut the production down in 2007. The world saw three generations of the MR cars and a comeback post 12 years of the discontinuation would not hurt at all.
Considering the success tasted by the Porsche Boxter and Cayman models, a new MR/MR-S with the German automaker's mid-engine and rear-wheel-drive setup would do wonders. While we are not sure if Tada meant what he was talking about or just kidding around, a mere possibility of the MR badge making a return has excited us. We would surely love for Tada to have a word with both Toyota and Porsche and get the engineers working.
