Will the Kia Sportage have the same warm reception as in UK?

MANILA: Kia has sold half a million units of the Sportage in the United Kingdom (UK) since its launch, marking a significant milestone for the nameplate. 

And with its imminent return (after being discontinued in the early 2020s), one can’t help but wonder if it will now have the staying power, or the right recipe to replicate its success in Europe?

31 years in the UK, and counting 

According to Kia, the Sportage has become one of its most popular and recognizable models in the UK. 

It added that it has been sold there for 31 years now (33 years globally) and has spanned five generations, ultimately reaching the said achievement. 

And in the past three years, the Kia Sportage has seen significant growth in the UK with sales accelerating from 384,778 in 2023, to half a million in 2026, and — the carmaker pointed out — continues to dominate sales there. 

Looking at its past accolades, the UK-spec Kia Sportage has been named the number one sport utility vehicle (SUV) there in both 2024 and 2025 (with 47,163 and 47,788 registrations respectively), and ranked as the best-selling car overall in both years. 

“With more than 115,000 Sportage sales over the past three years, the Sportage has never been more popular,” Kia wrote in a press release. 

In 2026, Kia reported 21,274 registrations in the UK as of May. 

500,000th Kia Sportage 

Kia shared that the The 500,000th sale was for a new Sportage GT-Line Hybrid in Blue Flame, bought from GWR (Great West Road) Kia, in Brentford, West London. 

“Reaching half a million Sportage sales in the UK is a landmark moment for Kia. The Sportage has become the UK’s favourite family SUV because it consistently provides what people want: a family SUV with quality and reliability they can trust, efficient and flexible powertrains, all housed in a thoughtful and stylish design. Its continued success shows the strength of our brand and the trust customers place in us,” Kia UK President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Philpott was quoted as saying.  

Can it replicate the same results in PH? 

With the aforementioned numbers, there is no denying that the Kia Sportage has found commercial success in the UK, but the hybrid compact SUV segment appears to have some strong contenders in the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and even the Honda CR-V, as well as nameplates from other Chinese brands. 

On that note, it will be interesting to see the full specifications of the vehicle (for the Philippine market), its price positioning, and the actual experience it provides behind the wheel, to better understand how the Kia Sportage stacks up against the competition.
