Kawasaki Ninja 650 vs Z650S: what are the differences?

Both sporty, but wearing vastly different body styles

Kawasaki Ninja 650 vs Z650S: what are the differences?

Kawasaki Motors Philippines has recently unleashed its 2026 model lineup for the local market. The aforementioned, of course, includes the updated Ninja 650, which has proven itself a popular nameplate for the Japanese marque worldwide.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the price of the Kawasaki Ninja 650 in the Philippines?

In the Philippines, the Kawasaki Ninja 650 retails at P456,500.
  • How much horsepower and torque can the Kawasaki Ninja Z650S produce?

The Kawasaki Ninja Z650S can produce up to 67 horsepower and 67.5 Newton-meters of torque.
  • In the Philippine market, however, the Kawasaki Ninja 650 is joined by the Ninja Z650S. As such, curious would-be buyers who are on the hunt for a sporty, 649-cubic-centimeter ride may be asking: What is the difference between the two? Let’s find out here.

    Full fairings vs. Sugomi Supernaked

The biggest difference between the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Ninja Z650S is their prevailing body styles.

For the Ninja 650, it wears an aerodynamic, fully faired look that the Ninja series of bikes is known for. Specifically, it uses an upper cowl, side panels, and a rear tail section, all made of lightweight Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic. These are touted by the brand as easily removable for repairs, but are durable enough to withstand the rigors of on-road and even on-track use.

On the flip side, the Ninja Z650S wears the Kawasaki “Sugomi” supernaked design. As the brand itself explains, this look intends to convey the aggressive stance of a predator. This, of course, is highlighted by its sharp-looking “head” that comes with a pair of squinting LED headlamps.

The aforementioned goes together with an exposed engine section, which ups the ante of the motorcycle’s muscularity.

As expected, the supernaked bike might have fewer aerodynamic qualities than the regular Ninja 650. Otherwise, it is quite a headturner, and access to many of its components, especially its engine, is quite good.

Moreover, the Kawasaki Z650S comes with slightly wider handlebars, which will, of course, result in very different handling characteristics. Also, it has a different seat shape that goes for a slightly more upright riding position.

    What’s the same?

While the Kawsaki Ninja 650 and Z650S are very different bikes in style, the two actually share very similar mechanical specs and features.

For starters, the two are propelled by a 649-cc parallel-twin, double-overhead-cam (DOHC) liquid-cooled gasoline engine. The two also get a six-speed gearbox.

With that kind of powertrain, the two Kawasaki two-wheelers can produce up to 67 horsepower and 65.7 Newton-meters of torque

Other notable mechanical bits found on both rides include the following:

    • Fuel-injected system
    • Wet multi-plate clutch with slipper system
    • Trellis frame made out of high-tensile steel
    • 15-liter fuel tank
    • Dual 300 millimeter (mm) front and single 220 mm rear disc brakes
    • Anti-lock braking system
    • TFT color display
    • 41-mm telescopic front fork
    • Horizontal back-link rear shock with adjustable preloads

    Price

Since its introduction to the local market, the Kawasaki Ninja Z650S retails for P439,000. It is slightly more affordable than the Kawasaki Ninja 650, priced at P456,500

    Final thoughts

While the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Z650S are mechanically identical, there are reasons someone might choose one over the other.

For one thing, the fully-faired Ninja 650 could form the basis of a more serious track weapon, considering its more aerodynamic profile. On the other hand, the Kawasaki Ninja Z650S could make for a mean-looking ride for cruising on public roads.

    So, which one’s your pick?
