Here’s how to save fuel when using motorcycles

MANILA: Motorcycles are already considered a “more efficient way” to move around and this is evident in the number of motorists using them for commuting, business, or weekend leisure.

However, skyrocketing fuel prices due to the crisis in the Middle East are hurting riders.

With that, here are some practical tips to make the most out of the fuel in your tank, as shared by the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA).

Ride smoothly, steadily

Just like those on four wheels, riders need to avoid sudden acceleration and braking by keeping a steady pace on open roads and easing off the throttle when anticipating stops.

Keep motorcycles in tip-top shape

Motorcycle owners must follow regular engine tune-ups, oil changes, and proper chain adjustments to help powertrains reduce inefficient fuel burns. This would help them prevent possible major repairs later on. 

Avoid idling

Do not keep your engine idle for long periods, as this consumes fuel without covering much ground. If possible, turn off the engine during extended stops.

Check tire pressure

Make it a point to check your tire pressure before heading out, as running underinflated forces the engine to work harder to due to increased resistance. Additionally, properly inflated tires improve handling, and give riders a good grip on the road. 

Lessen unnecessary baggage

Carrying unnecessary items adds more strain on the engine. Carrying less weight means reduced effort for the engine, which results in better fuel efficiency.

Use the right fuel grade

Motorcycle brands already specify the correct fuel grade to ensure effective engine operations, so it is better to follow their recommendations. After all, higher-priced or higher-octane does not automatically better mileage if your motorcycle is not designed for it.

Plan trips

Make every ride efficient by planning your trips. Combine multiple errands into one trip and choose less congested routes to reduce time spent in stop-and-go traffic.
