UM Max ZR

The UM Max ZR is an entry-level commuter motorcycle, and this definition is pretty evident with the way it looks and feels up close and personal. For a basic commuter, the UM Max ZR looks pretty decent, though the quality levels and fit and finish of the panels and components don’t feel up to the mark.

Starting from the front, the UM Max ZR has a smart-looking fascia, comprising of a nice V-shaped halogen headlamp, which is flanked by tiny white-coloured panels with mild graphics on them. These panels also come attached with clear lens turn indicators on them, with the front fascia of the UM Max ZR also having a tiny white-coloured visor at the top. The headlamp unit also comes with a small pilot lamp placed in the middle of the upper portion. The UM Max ZR has a very basic rounded front fender and rubber gaiters for the front forks.

The front fascia is perhaps the only stylish-looking element of the UM Max ZR, as the commuter motorcycle has a pretty basic visual appeal in its side profile. The motorcycle has a compact fuel tank which has nice curved knee recesses, which are good enough even for taller people, and it comes with nice flowing graphics that continue their way to the sleek and compact side body panels, too. The Max ZR has its engine in a theme of bronze, along with white-coloured five-spoke alloy wheels and a black-themed exhaust pipe setup.

The commuter appeal of the UM Max ZR becomes more evident when you move towards the rear profile, where just like many other cheap and entry-level motorcycles, it also misses out on rear section body panels below the pillion perch. At the back, the UM Max ZR has a compact tail lamp positioned below a long tubular grab rail, which can also serve as a luggage rack for mounting small items. The plain rear fender of the UM Max ZR has a mount in the middle for the tail lamp and comes attached with clear lens turn indicators.

As expected, the UM Max ZR's instrument console is also basic. It has an all-analogue theme and comprises a speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, and warning light. The long seat looks large and is accommodating enough for two full-sized adults to be comfortable.

With a basic and cost-effective chassis, comprising of a steel frame and a conventional suspension setup of telescopic forks at the front and dual hydraulic coil springs at the rear, the UM Max ZR feels nimble and easy to ride. Its low kerb weight plays its part in riding dynamics, too, with the UM Max ZR remaining sure-footed at lower speeds. However, the motorcycle doesn’t feel much involved in riding at higher speeds. With 18-inch alloy wheels having a 2.75-18 tyre at the front and a 3.00-18 tyre at the rear, the UM Max ZR has drum brakes at both ends.

The UM Max ZR has a four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled, 124cc engine as its powerhouse, which is paired with a 5-speed transmission unit. With a maximum power output of 10.7 bhp and a peak torque output of 8.6 Nm, the UM Max ZR feels decently powerful for a 125cc motorcycle of its size and weight. However, this engine could have had better refinement levels and a bit more torque in the higher rev range.

The UM Max ZR doesn’t come with many safety features on board, apart from the basic warning lights on offer, for it is a motorcycle that has been built to a low price point.

The UM Max ZR does a fairly decent job as an entry-level commuter motorcycle. Its decent amount of power and easy riding ability make it a viable option for those who are looking for an affordable commuting solution.
