3 reasons to buy the Toyota Hilux BEV

Toyota Motor Philippines now has a battery electric vehicle (BEV) version of the popular Hilux pickup truck nameplate. It is the first-ever version of this long-running model to get a full-electric powertrain in the local scene, and so it represents a huge milestone for the Japanese marque.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the suggested retail price of the Toyota Hilux BEV?

The Toyota Hilux BEV has a suggested retail price of P2.99 million.
  • What is the range of the Toyota Hilux BEV?

The Toyota Hilux BEV has a range of 315 kilometers.
  • On that note, are there any particular reasons why you should buy the all-new Toyota Hilux BEV? Let’s check out the three biggest reasons why.

Plenty of power, torque on tap

The biggest reason for anyone to buy the all-new Toyota Hilux BEV is its amount of power and torque. To be exact, its front motor can put out 106 horsepower (hp) and 200 Newton-meters (Nm), while its rear can dish out 171 hp and 269 Nm of torque.

With its front and rear motor setup, the Hilux BEV also comes with a 4x4 system. And being an electric vehicle (HEV) it has instant torque - a huge boon for those wanting to use the model as a hauler or as an off-road rig.

Speaking of going off-road, the Toyota Hilux BEV, just like its regular internal combustion siblings, comes with a ladder frame chassis. This, of course, ensures durability and better flexibility when tackling difficult terrain.

On the one hand, its suspension consists of front coil springs and a rear leaf spring setup. So, while it uses a more advanced dual-motor powertrain, it somewhat retains the same amount of toughness, stability, and handling that one expects from the Hilux nameplate as a whole. Of course, it also helps that the Hilux BEV has a massive 287 millimeters (mm) of ground clearance.

Other than what was mentioned above, the Hilux BEV comes with a 59.2 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery. This affords the model with a range of 315 kilometers (km), according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

It doesn’t have as much range as mainstream crossover EV models, but that’s more than enough for daily driving, in-city deliveries, and driving to and from large properties like a warehouse or a farm.

Along with that amount of range, the Hilux BEV comes standard with alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) charging ports.

    Other stories:

    Rich in interior, exterior amenities

Just like the turbodiesel next-generation Hilux variants, the one with the BEV powertrain was kitted out to be a good mix of practicality and comfort. So, even if it's a tough, off-road-capable EV, many would-be buyers will appreciate how daily-drivable it is.

For starters, the model gets a five-seater, two-row arrangement equipped with leather seats, plenty of cup/bottle holders, USB Type-C ports, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system.

The driver, meanwhile, has access to amenities such as smart keyless entry, a push-to-start button, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, a drive mode selector, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a shift-by-wire gear selector, a leather steering wheel, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.

Paired with the digital gauge cluster is a similarly sized infotainment touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The said screen is linked with an eight-piece speaker set.

The exterior of the Toyota Hilux BEV comes with a lot of features as well. It has a full complement of LED lighting fixtures, a power-folding/adjustable side mirror, chunky bumpers, side steps, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Notably, the exterior of the all-electric Hilux variant is shaped and sized similarly to the other trims. On that note, it will share many aftermarket parts with its ICE siblings.

    Lots of safety gear

In the olden days, pickup trucks were deemed simple but sturdy, low-tech solutions to logistics problems on difficult terrain, or when you need to haul heavy cargo, awkward objects that won’t fit in your van or car, or simply a lot of stuff.

As shown by the all-electric Hilux, however, pickup trucks have evolved into great all-rounder vehicles. So, apart from creature comforts, it also comes packaged with plenty of safety equipment, making it suitable for a wide variety of use-case scenarios - from busy in-city roads to the open highway.

For its passive suite, the Toyota Hilux BEV comes with dual front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, side airbags, a curtain shield airbag, anti-lock braking, stability control, hill-start assist, downhill-assist, ISOFIX, front and rear sensors, and a panoramic view monitor.

The aforementioned are reinforced by the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced driver assist systems (ADAS), which consist of:

    • Pre-collision system
    • Lane trace assist
    • Lane departure alert
    • Automatic high beams
    • Dynamic radar cruise control
    • Blind-spot monitoring
    • Rear-cross traffic alert

    Final thoughts

Overall, the Toyota Hilux BEV isn’t just a milestone for the Japanese brand; it is a technological marvel that will surely entice those with a hankering for adventure while being mindful of their emissions.

Granted, its range cannot be compared to lighter crossover EV models, but what it has in spades makes up for a highly capable truck that has ample cargo-carrying capacity, creature comforts, and raw powertrain output.

So, if you like what you see in the Toyota Hilux BEV, do visit the nearest Toyota dealership and ask for a test drive.
