Why we think it’s popular

The Toyota Hilux, in its current form and generation, has been around the country for quite some time. They’re an ubiquitous sight on local roads and even on local worksites and businesses. 

On that note, the nameplate has had enough years to have proven itself when it comes to durability and reliability. Of course, many other pickup trucks in the market are likewise sturdy, but buyers are aware of Toyota Motor Philippines’ extensive local dealership network, which is all equipped with the right stuff provide what an owner might need to keep his or her truck in tip-top shape. 

Otherwise, the top-of-the-line Toyota Hilux GR-S has also captured the attention of enthusiasts. Its 2.8-liter mill can generate up to 220 horsepower (hp) and 550 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque, and it also has differential locks with automatic disconnect functionality, Gazoo Racing disc brakes for all four wheels, and a robust double wishbone (front) and leaf spring (rear) suspension system with monotube shock absorbers.

Toyota Hilux: other specifications

Apart from the top-spec Toyota Hilux GR-S, the Conquest 4x4 and 4x2 versions all utilize a 2.8-liter mill, albeit with a slightly less powerful tune of up to 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The G, E, and J trims, on the other hand, get a 2.4-liter engine that can dish out 148 hp and 400 Nm. 

Depending on the variant, the locally-available Hilux uses a six-speed automatic or manual gearbox. 

On the outside, the model has full LED lighting, power-fold/adjust side mirrors, tailgate and hood lift assists, a bedliner, a sports bar, and overfenders. Completing the appearance of the model is a set of 17-inch to 18-inch wheels. 

Specific to the Hilux GR-S are suede seats, power-adjust front seats, a 60:40 split-fold rear seat, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. The driver is also provided with a leather steering wheel, a 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, paddle shifters, a drive-mode selector, a push-to-start button, and a tilt/telescopic steering column - among others. 

Safety-wise, the Hilux GR-S has dual front airbags, side airbags, curtain shield airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, anti-lock braking, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, downhill assist, ISOFIX, the Toyota Vehicle Security System, a 360-degree view monitor, as well as front and rear parking sensors. 

The said safety gear is backed by a suite of advanced driver-assist systems, which include:

• Lane departure alert
• Blind-spot monitoring
• Rear-cross traffic alert
• Dynamic radar cruise control

Final thoughts

Like the Toyota Hiace and many other nameplates under the Japanese marque’s local arm, there’s a Hilux for everyone. Plus, the top-end of its variant lineup, the GR-S, presents itself as a sporty, off-road-capable ride that will surely enthrall would-be buyers. 

Price-wise, the Toyota Hilux ranges from P1.582 million-P2.46 million. The Fleet trims, meanwhile, are available with a price ranging from P891,000-P1.32 million.
