Due to its impressive performance, charging capability, and range, the Ioniq 5 became part of this year’s list. Since the awards began in 1995, Hyundai has bagged a total of 15 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems recognitions.

“With the introduction of our new E-GMP platform, the Ioniq 5 created new advancements in the automotive powertrain world with ultra-fast charging and Vehicle to Load two-way on-board charging. We are thrilled to once again be recognized by Wards for our leadership in eco-friendly technologies,” Hyundai America Technical Center Inc. Electrified Propulsion Development Director Byungho Lee stated.

“The Ioniq 5 redefines the modern vehicle, not only from the propulsion standpoint,” Wards Auto Judge Drew Winter said. “The car creates a new, roomy interior space by taking advantage of all the things an EV platform doesn’t have, like a transmission tunnel. The Ioniq 5’s propulsion system doesn’t just sell the car; it redefines what a car can be.”

The Ioniq 5 is the first model in Hyundai’s Ioniq brand. It is engineered with the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which is Hyundai Motor Group’s specialized architecture for BEVs. The vehicle features a long wheelbase, eco-friendly interior features, modern driver assistance and safety features, and a powerful performance with ultra-fast charging and a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function.

The design of Hyundai Ioniq 5 drew inspiration from the Hyundai Pony, the Korean carmaker’s first-ever production car.

The Ioniq 5 features a distinctive midsize crossover utility vehicle (CUV) exterior look with clean and edgy linear accents. It measures 4,635mm long, 1,890mm wide, and 1,605mm high. The Ioniq 5 has a 3,000mm wheelbase.

The Ioniq 5’s front end is designed with Hyundai’s first clamshell hood that is made with less panel gaps for better aerodynamics. The Ioniq 5 also features a striking front bumper, highlighted by V-shaped daytime running lights. It also comes with auto flush door handles and Hyundai’s “Parametric Dynamics” style, similar to the Hyundai tucson. The Ioniq 5is fitted with 20-inch aero-optimized wheels.

Another remarkable exterior feature is the eco-friendly solar roof, which collects and transmits energy to the vehicle’s battery to prevent battery discharge on long trips.

On the inside, the Ioniq 5 is designed with the “Living Space concept that comes with an adjustable center console known as the Universal Island. This offers a more flexible cabin space. It also has an extended wheelbase that provides extra legroom.

The Ioniq 5 also comes with electronically adjusted front seats, whose thickness was reduced by 30% so that the second-row passengers will have more room. The vehicle is also equipped with heated steering wheel and heated front seat functions.

The car seats, headliner, door trim, floor, and armrest were all made from sustainable materials such as recycled PET bottles, bio PET yearns and wool yarns, eco-processed leather, and bio paint with plant extracts to further emphasize Hyundai’s commitment to promoting sustainability.

The second-row seats also have slide forward and folding functions to create more luggage space when needed. The Ioniq 5’s standard 531-liter cargo space can be expanded to nearly 1,600 liters when the seats are fully folded.

The Ioniq 5 also features a wide and customizable dual cockpit with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a 12-inch digital gauge cluster. Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. unveiled the Hyundai Ioniq 5 at the Philippine International Motor Show 2022 held on September 15 to 18 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. It will hit the local market in January 2023.
