Hyundai, Kia developing cutting-edge emissions monitoring system

MANILA: Hyundai Motor Corporation and Kia Corporation have both announced the development of their Integrated Greenhouse Gas Information System (IGIS). Once completed, the said system will be installed on all of the two car brand’s facilities to effectively quantify the carbon emissions of a particular vehicle within its entire lifetime. 

According to Kia, the IGIS leverages the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, which enables it to track and monitor just how much carbon is spewed out by a particular car in its entire life cycle. In doing so, both Hyundai and Kia can ensure consistent data collection to assess emissions systematically. 

With the aforementioned data from the cutting-edge emissions monitoring system, the two carmakers can develop more efficient engines in the future. Beyond a vehicle’s carbon emissions, however, the IGIS system can also take into account LCA data from suppliers and global facilities. As such, it can likewise take into consideration the amount of emissions rendered by the entire supply chain involved in building a car. 

Doing so will also enable Hyundai and Kia to react appropriately to new global environmental regulations. In other words, it will cement the two brands' commitment to global sustainability initiatives through proactive compliance. 

For extra security and data integrity, the IGIS also uses blockchain technology, a decentralized database similar to those used in cryptocurrencies and logistics databases. By doing so, the data it crunches will become more difficult to tamper with. 

To note, falsification of data has been a hot topic in the automotive industry in recent years. One of the biggest cases was the “Dieselgate” scandal, which involved Volkswagen back in 2015 when it was found to have violated the United States Clean Air Act. 

“In our mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, we are taking a significant leap forward with the development of the IGIS,” Executive Vice President and Head of ICT Division at Hyundai Motor and Kia Eunsook Jin said. 

“Through IGIS, we are intensifying our efforts to build a responsible value chain, demonstrating remarkable innovation in the automotive industry.
