Is it high time for Suzuki Wagon R to enter PH?

MANILA: As of June 2025, Suzuki Motor Corporation has achieved an accumulated global sales of 10 million units of its Wagon R lineup of models. The brand’s journey towards the aforementioned milestone started 31 years and nine months ago when the Wagon R was initially introduced back in September 1993. 

With the aforementioned milestone, it might be the right time for the Suzuki Wagon R to enter the country. The nameplate, after all, is already sold in more than 75 countries with a version produced and marketed by India-based Suzuki Maruti, and several other versions made in Hungary, Indonesia, and many other territories. 

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the many customers who use this product. The Wagon R was recognized for its innovation and high practicality as a mini wagon, and became one of the leading models not only for our company but also for minicars,” Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki said. 

“Team Suzuki will continue to develop products tailored to the needs of customers in the sales area and work as one to continue to support daily transportation,” Suzuki added.

Suzuki Wagon R: specifications

In the context of the Philippine setting, the Suzuki Wagon R could become the perfect daily driver for city dwellers due to its compact body. It is also touted for its high fuel efficiency - a must-have nowadays due to unstable fuel prices. 

If Suzuki Philippines Incorporated (SPH) decided to bring in the Wagon R, however, the version that’s most likely to enter the market could be the India-spec Wagon R produced by Maruti Suzuki. After all, some SPH nameplates, such as the S-Presso and Dzire Hybrid, are manufactured in India. 

For its powertrain, the India-spec Suzuki Wagon R uses a 1.0-liter inline-3 or 1.0-liter inline-4 engine, which is able to use gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG).

In gasoline mode, the 1.0-liter inline-4 K12N can produce up to 89 horsepower (hp) and 113.7 Newton-meters of torque. Power is sent to its front wheels via a manual or an automated gear-shift (AGS) transmission.

To note, another well-known version of the Suzuki Wagon R is the sixth-gen hybrid sold in Japan. Mazda also has a rebadged version sold in the same country as the Flair Hybrid.
