Lexus LX600 trademark suggest future upgrades

MANILA: Lexus, the luxury vehicle division of Toyota, just filed a new trademark for Lexus LX600 that could suggest that a new generation of range-topping SUV is in the works. According to the records of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the patent application was submitted on October 10 and is still on process.

Several trademark fillings in other countries, including Canada, Peru, and the Philippines (yes, here too!), were filed on the same date or the day after. In Moldova, the company submitted a trademark for LX500d.

First introduced in the Philippines in 1995, the Lexus LX series has evolved to three generations, with the latest model being released in 2007. LX is the premium, more luxurious counterpart of the Land Cruiser as both SUV rides on the same platform and body-on-frame chassis.

Building on the name, LX600 may mean two things:

• First, it will be a new flagship variant of the SUV or
• A replacement of the LX 570

If the LX 570 model signifies a 5.7-L V8 engine under the hood, we can somehow deduce that the LX600 may come with a 6.0-L V8 engine. But that would be an enormous engine. Some speculate that the 600 designation does not have anything to do with the engine displacement since automakers are moving away from large-displacement engines towards smaller units.

Also, hybrids' options are to be more compliant with looming emissions norms. It can be that since LX and the Land Cruiser has an identical engine bay, the LX will likely follow the global trend and that the 600 could signify a flagship hybrid model. But the conundrum would be, the labeling would instead be 600H.

Since the patent is still in the filing stage, auto enthusiasts like us might be overzealous and overthinking Lexus’ move to file for patents. Besides, the company has no right to use the name until the patents are granted to Lexus. Till then, all we can do is speculate until Lexus release official information. If we were to guess, the new Lexus LX600 would probably be unveiled in the last quarter of 2020 at the earliest, though the more realistic schedule would be a 2021 debut.
