New Nissan launches Frontier Pro, Frontier Pro PHEV in China

MANILA: Nissan Motor Corporation Limited has launched the all-new Frontier Pro and Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in China. To note, the Frontier nameplate was the same model name utilized by the pickup truck that was replaced by the Navara in the Philippines and other markets. 

As reported previously, the new Nissan Frontier Pro is a totally new product that slots in as the brand's first-ever PHEV pickup truck. It was a product fully developed by the Japanese marque’s new joint venture in China that goes by the name of “Zhengzhou Nissan Automobile Corporation Limited.”

“The Frontier Pro is a model born in China and developed for the global market, representing a significant milestone in Nissan’s global strategy, Nissan Motor Corporation Limited Chairman of China Management Committee Steven Ma said. 

“We will begin exports in the first half of the year, delivering the excitement of Chinese technology and trend creation to the world. Nissan will continue to strongly support the development of Zhenzhou Nissan, deepen its China strategy, drive the market with local innovation, and establish a new trend in the LCV market with Nissan’s foundation and China’s speed,” Ma added. 

Powertrain

For its powertrain, Frontier Pro PHEV uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine paired with an electric motor and a battery. In total, this version can churn out 402 horsepower and 800 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. It also has an electric-only range of 135 kilometers, according to the New European Driving Cycle. 

As for the internal combustion-only Frontier Pro, Zhengzhou Nissan didn’t provide a maximum horsepower output figure, but it is touted to be capable of delivering up to 500 Nm of torque.

Exterior

Style-wise, both versions of the China-spec Zhengzhou Nissan Frontier Pro sport a modern take on the Japanese marque’s “V-Motion” grille. It comes with a laser-engraved Nissan logo and LED light bars surrounding a closed-off grille. Further down below the vehicle’s front fascia is a beefy bumper with skid plates. 

The rear of the model, on the other hand, gets a three-dimensional taillight bar.

Interior

Like most midsize pickup truck models, the Chinese market Zhengzhou Nissan Frontier Pro has a five-seater layout. The aforementioned is equipped with leather seats with suede inserts for many other interior surfaces. 

Per the company, its rear seats can be configured in various positions, including a flat fold feature that provides up to 970 liters of storage. 

The cabin of the pickup truck also has soundproofing, vibration-damping materials, and a panoramic sunroof. 

Safety

For now, the company has not disclosed the Frontier Pro and Frontier Pro PHEV’s full suite of safety gear, but it was indicated that it comes standard with 25 driver-assistance systems. 

Exterior panels of the vehicle are also notable for their 100 percent double-sided galvanized steel construction. Its underbody components, meanwhile, get added durability from a protective coating. 

Availability

According to Zhengzhou Nissan, the Frontier and Frontier Pro will be exported to global markets next year. It wasn’t made clear whether the ASEAN market is included, but it was stated by Steven Ma above that the all-new pickup truck is a huge part of Nissan’s global strategy. 

With that said, let’s wait for more updates from Nissan, although some people will certainly have had their interest piqued by the PHEV variant’s peppy output figures.
