Next-Generation Boxster and Cayman Will Get 718 Badging
MANILA: It's official now, the next-generation Boxster and Cayman will now receive a 718 badging attached to their name. Hinting towards a four-cylinder engine that has been long due from 2008. It was back in 2011 when Porsche confirmed that its engineers are on work, developing a four-CYL mill with horizontally opposed boxer design.
Now, things are taking well-crafted turns as Matthis Mueller, Porsche CEO, announced that a four-cylinder aspired Porsche Boxter and Porsche Cayman will go on floor next year. So, somewhere in mid-2016 we will get see both these cars in their long due facelifted avatars. As for the 718 addition, it comes with a historic significance attached.
Back in 1957, Porsche launched a sports car carrying the said 718 name, stuffed with a mid-mounted, four-cylinder mill. The car won many titles world over in different racing events that included Italian Targa Florio, and European Hill Climb Championship to name to a few. And now, the company is all set to introduce a new turbocharged, mounted amidships flat-four engine in both cars that will be called 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. As for Porsche Boxster price, the company is hinting towards a higher price tag than that accompanying the 718 Cayman.
Both these future cars are expected to share many similarities both on the technical and designing front. In-depth details are not yet revealed, but as per earlier reports we can see a 2.0L flat-four mill powering it and generating 240 hp of maximum output in the base model and 300 hp in the S model. The power figures will rise up to 370 hp in the GTS trim that will aspire with the same flat-four engine.
