Meet the Porsche Cayenne Electric, Cayenne Turbo Electric

MANILA: Sometime last month, Porsche staged a virtual launch of its second electric sport utility vehicle (SUV). 

Presented through the marque’s official YouTube channel, as well as other media platforms, the Porsche Cayenne Electric and its performance-oriented counterpart, Cayenne Turbo Electric, were exhibited at the fifth Icons of Porsche festival in the Dubai Design District three days later. 

With the nameplate achieving a technological milestone, the electrified SUV also sets the bar as being “the most powerful production Porsche of all time.” 

“Inspiring customers is our top priority at Porsche. With the electrification of the Cayenne, we are reaching a new level of performance that sets standards for the future. At the same time, we will continue to develop the Cayenne with efficient combustion and hybrid drive systems well into the next decade,” Porsche Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing Matthias Becker noted. 

Performance of a ‘super sports car’ 

According to the German car brand, the Porsche Cayenne is an SUV imbued with super sports car DNA. 

Sporting dual electric motors and a newly developed 113-kilowatt-hour high-voltage battery with double-sided cooling for optimum thermal management, its two variants are equipped with all-wheel drive as well as the electronic Porsche Traction Management. 

The standard Porsche Cayenne Electric puts out some 402-403 horsepower (hp) in normal operation and dishes out approximately 436 horses with Launch Control. Torque peaks at 835 Newton-meters (Nm). As such, it zooms from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour (kph) in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 230 kph. 

It has an estimated range of up to 642 kilometers (km). 

As for the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric, the standard power production is at 845 hp, but it generates as much as 1,140 hp with Launch Control. Pulling power maxes out at 1,500 Nm. 

For those wanting more “oomph,” the Turbo version has a Push-to-Pass function that adds some 173 hp to its overall power for 10 seconds. 

On that note, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric can accelerate from zero to 100 kph in just 2.5 seconds and from nil to 200 kph in 7.4 seconds with speed peaking at 260 kph. 

Estimated range is up to 623 km. 

“The Cayenne Electric shows performance in a completely new dimension, with innovative technologies that we have developed in motorsport. It sets new standards in the SUV segment – in terms of driving characteristics as well as charging,” Porsche Executive Board Chairman Oliver Blume was quoted as saying. 

The Porsche Cayenne Electric also offers leading energy recovery figures, achieving Formula E levels with up to 600 kilowatts of recuperative power. That said, the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen-headquartered manufacturer pointed out that about 97 percent of all braking operations can be handled purely by the electric motors. 

Nevertheless, for customers wanting more, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake can be installed for the range-topping Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric. 

Other notable features that ensure a dynamic driving experience for those eyeing the model range include the following: 

• Adaptive air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management 
• Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus limited-slip rear differential 
• Porsche Active Ride

Progressive exterior, interior 

The Porsche Cayenne Electric boasts a new exterior design that is progressive and dynamic. Its highlights include a low hood with slim Matrix LED headlights, which emphasise the width of the vehicle and combine all lighting functions into one module; as well as strongly contoured wings; and the flyline (the iconic gently sloping roofline). 

Its side profile is characterized by frameless doors with a striking crease in the door surface. The Porsche Cayenne Electric also flaunts side skirts that have a distinctly three-dimensional design. The SUV also gets model-specific wheel arch trims to emphasize its off-road character. 

Speaking of off-roading, Porsche noted that it is offering an Off-Road package for customers with special requirements in terms of approach angle and robustness. The upgrade changes the front section with modified geometry to help owners safely navigate rough dirt roads, particularly steep ascents or descents, and difficult terrain.

At the back, it dons a light strip with a distinctive three-dimensional look and animated graphics, as well as illuminated Porsche lettering, that underline its modern design language. 

“The new Cayenne is unmistakably Porsche and unmistakably Cayenne. We’ve built on proven design features and preserved what makes this SUV unique. The result is a modern design concept that carries the Cayenne into the future,” Porsche Head of Style Michael Mauer said. 

Inside, the Porsche Cayenne Electric comes with notable appointments like the newly developed Porsche Driver Experience with the Flow Display, which is an elegantly curved OLED panel that blends seamlessly into the center console and allows clear separation between the display and control areas. 

The expansive infotainment system is complemented by a similarly large OLED digital instrument cluster that measures 14.25 inches. A 14.9-inch passenger display can be had as an optional add-on. 

Other features include the newly introduced Mood Modes and the sliding Panoramic Roof with Variable Light Control. 

Complementing timepiece 

According to the carmaker, Porsche Design’s program of custom-built timepieces has been expanded to include the SUV model range. 

This means that Porsche Cayenne customers can now order a watch from the brand’s own Swiss watch manufacturer that is tailored to their vehicle down to the last detail.
