Omoda 5 EV passes 2 crucial battery tests

MANILA: Omoda revealed that its flagship electric car — the E5 — has passed two crucial electric vehicle (EV) battery tests, namely water wading and underbody scraping.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How deep was the water that the Omoda E5 has to go through?

Per Omoda, the E5 had to brave a pool with water as high as its front grille.
  • How high was the metal post that the Omoda E5 had to pass through?

The Omoda E had to pass through a metal pole that's 210mm high.
  • Per the Chinese car brand, the said achievement only proves that the Omoda E5 offers “true safety” as it “successfully withstood these challenges, demonstrating the vehicle’s reliable safety capabilities.”

    Water wading test

According to Omoda, the E5 completed the water wading test without any signs of water leakage, electrical faults, or any insulation data anomaly alarm triggers.

The feat — aimed to verify the car’s sealed waterproof performance — was achieved after having the Omoda E5 drive through a pool with water levels covering the front grille. Surging waves made the evaluation more challenging as they caused the water to rise further, reaching at least 75 percent of the EV’s front fascia.

Nevertheless, the Omoda E5 navigated the entire pool steadily.

    Underbody scraping

Equally stringent was the underbody scraping test, which proved that the Omoda E5’s battery pack can withstand impact.

The test, according to the Chery-owned brand, simulated “accidental” scenarios that happen in real-life driving conditions where the vehicle encounters obstacles protruding above the road surface.

During the said underbody scraping test, the Omoda E5 was driven over a 210-millimeter (mm)-high metal post, which posed a significant challenge to the EV’s structural integrity. After scraping its lowest point — 30mm above the obstacle — the underbody battery pack remained undamaged and effectively protected.

“Safety has always been the foundational principle of Omoda’s vehicle manufacturing. The Omoda E5’s satisfactory performance in both the water wading and underbody scraping tests is a testament to Omoda’s utmost pursuit of safety. This not only significantly assures users of their future travel but also showcases how Omoda, through its advancements in safety technology, continues to elevate industry standards,” Omoda said in a press statement.

The Omoda E5 and the Omoda 5 (internal combustion engine-powered model) will make their Philippine debut at the 2024 Manila International Auto Show. Vehicles from the brand’s sister marque Jaecoo will also be in attendance.

Those looking to check out the Omoda E5 can drop by the company’s booth at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay.
