PH-spec new Toyota Hilux GR-S is more than an eye-candy

After pulling out a surprise at the recently-concluded second leg of the Gazoo Racing (GR Vios Cup 2023, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has shared notable details about the upgraded Hilux GR-S— pointing out that the vehicle is more than just aesthetic upgrades.

Despite being powered by a 2.8-liter four-cylinder, 16-valve double overhead cam variable nozzle turbodiesel engine with air-cooled intercooler, the leading automotive distributor confirmed that the new Hilux GR-S can provide up to 224 horsepower (a bump-up from the previous version’s 200hp churn.

The aforementioned powertrain is paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox with part-time four-wheel drive.

TMP explained to Zigwheels Philippines that the increase in power can be attributed to the tweak in the pick-up truck’s electronic control unit.

Further, the latest version of the Gazoofied pick-up truck has GR front and rear disc brakes with GR brake calipers, as well as monotube shock absorbers.

Design that delivers

The new Toyota Hilux GR-S is chunkier than the outgoing version — taking cues from the Dakar-winning GR Hilux.

Additionally, the spruced-up model grew wider by 120 millimeters and taller by 65 millimeters compared to the previous iteration. The increase in size could be attributed to the wide-tread body, matte black GR-S overfenders, 17-inch alloy GR design wheels with 265/65 all-terrain tires.

Moreover, its front fascia has been updated with a gloss black trim around the grille and a brushed silver embellishment on the bumper's lower portion. More gloss black appointments can be found on the rear portion of the vehicle, which complements the fashion bar that has provisions for a bed cover.

Cabin design

More GR-S logos can be found inside the new Toyota Hilux GR-S, which can be found on the steering wheel, headrests of the suede and leather seats. The said appointments blended with the overall sporty appearance highlighted by the red seatbelts and leather door trims with technical mesh.

The new Hilux GR-S also comes with a larger display audio system (now nine-inch big) with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a wireless charger. Other convenience features include smart entry and push-start system.

Meanwhile, it also has a host of safety technologies such as blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, panoramic view monitor, anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist control, and downhill assist control.
