Porsche Mission E concept gets a new name, Taycan
MANILA: Porsche, the manufacturer of high-performance cars from Germany, has renamed its first pure electric vehicle to the Taycan at the brand’s 70th-anniversary event. The official name has been changed but surely not its abilities. The Taycan is said to be a translation for “lively young horse” and also a reference to the Porsche’s crest which has a leaping horse imagery at the heart.
The silhouette of the car was also revealed at the event on the big screen. The Porsche Taycan will feature two powerful synchronous motors generating about 600 PS of max power. Porsche claims that the Taycan can accelerate from zero to 100 kmph in less than 3.5 seconds and comes with a driving range of more than 500 km. The production of the Taycan will begin in 2019.
Oliver Blume, Porsche CEO said, “Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom.”
Stefan Weckbach, the vice president of Porsche's battery electric vehicle program in conversation with The New York Times said, “The Taycan must be a Porsche first. But it must have repeatable and sustained performance. It cannot sacrifice performance."
In addition, the automaker said that this is just the start of the electrification at Porsche and by 2025, around 25 percent of sales will be accounted by hybrid and all-electric cars. Porsche has invested a handsome sum into the making of high-performance electric sports cars, a total of EUR 500 million. As a result, expect more variants of the Taycan coming. One of which is a crossover that has already been brought to light before called the Mission E Cross Turismo.
