VinFast PH launches web-based TCO Calculator

MANILA: VinFast has officially launched its Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Calculator website in the Philippines, allowing prospective buyers to compare the estimated long-term costs of owning an electric vehicle (EV) with those of gasoline- or diesel-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

The tool is now accessible on VinFast’s website and provides a more detailed look at vehicle ownership costs beyond the initial purchase price and specifications.

Users can select a VinFast model, enter their average monthly mileage, choose a battery ownership option, and specify their expected ownership period. After entering these parameters, the calculator then generates estimates for monthly financing payments, energy expenses, and total ownership costs, along with a comparison against a comparable ICE vehicle.

Per VinFast, the tool was designed to address concerns about the financial implications of switching to an EV.

The Vietnamese brand’s local arm provided an example of a VinFast user who owns a VF 7 Plus with a battery subscription and drives this EV about 2,000 kilometers (km) each month. The owner also intends to keep the VinFast EV for five years. 

In this case, the calculator estimates a TCO of around P1.884 million. Under similar conditions, an ICE model would have a higher TCO of P3.156 million. That represents a potential difference of around 40 percent, in favor of the VinFast EV.

The calculator takes into account factors including driving distance, fuel or electricity costs, financing payments, maintenance, battery ownership options, and the length of vehicle ownership. These inputs give users a more personalized estimate of their potential ownership costs based on their driving habits and selected parameters.

EV cost considerations

As VinFast itself has noted, the introduction of its TCO Calculator comes just in the nick of time, as fuel and other mobility-related expenses (maintenance, spare parts) have become a major factor for most Filipino motorists.

For starters, the Vietnamese brand cited a consumer study by Agile Data Solutions Inc., which found that one in six Filipinos is considering an EV or hybrid vehicle amid rising fuel and transportation costs. Local estimates cited by VinFast put electricity rates at around P12 per kilowatt-hour, compared with approximately P65 per liter for gasoline.

The Hai Phong-headquartered company added that these estimates balloon further for motorists with high monthly mileage, potentially offsetting the higher upfront cost associated with some EVs.

The aforementioned trend is likewise reflected in Deloitte’s 2026 Global Automotive Consumer Study, which found that 52 percent of US consumers considering an EV cited lower fuel costs as their primary motivation, while 40 percent identified overall vehicle costs and maintenance as major concerns.

Sure, a US study isn’t exactly representative of Filipino sensibilities, but considerations around owning and maintaining vehicles often show strong similarities across many cultures. 

For VinFast, the TCO Calculator provides prospective customers with a way to assess real-world costs, which are, of course, better than general claims. So, if you’re still on the fence when it comes to all-electric mobility, VinFast’s TCO Calculator might be a good place to clear up some misconceptions and anxieties.
