Hongqi E-QM5

The Hongqi E-QM5 comes with a minimalist cabin layout that exudes a blend of classic and modern styling. Up front, the driver gets a predominantly-analogue instrument cluster with a multi-information display in the middle, a microfiber leather-wrapped multi-control steering wheel with a memory function, and a modern-looking gear lever. Meanwhile, for entertainment and information accessibility, this sedan is fitted with a 10-inch LCD screen.

In terms of practicality, this executive sedan offers plenty of room for five passengers. Its PVC seats offer great cushioning and support for everyone on board both on short- and long-distance trips. The driver’s seat also comes with a memory function and 4-way lumbar support for elevated comfort at all times. For added convenience, rear passengers also get cup holders for their drinks. That said, the E-QM5’s cabin offers a mix of comfort, practicality, and functionality on the road.

In terms of dimensions, the Hongqi E-QM5 measures 5,040 mm in length, 1,910 mm in width, and 1,569 mm in height. This electric executive sedan also has a wheelbase of 2,990 mm.

The Hongqi E-QM5 flaunts a distinct, modern design, which sets it apart from other sedans on the road. Its confident-looking fascia, which resembles an orca, is flanked by polygonal LED headlights and curved LED DRLs. Underneath, it showcases Hongqi’s signature vertical-slatted design and displays the brand’s logo on its hood.  

On the sides, this sedan comes with electrically-adjustable mirrors and an elegant-looking set of 18-inch wheels with frost-like rims. Additionally, sharp character lines and some chrome accents add more detail to its overall silhouette. 

Similar to the front, its rear also displays a unique, modern design, accentuated by its LED taillights with a scythe-like shape. This sedan also comes with a high-mount third brake light, ensuring maximum visibility at all times.

Like other Hongqi models, the E-QM5 comes with a MacPherson Strut suspension at the front and a Multi-Link at the rear. Admittedly, this setup is tuned more for comfort than sportiness. Hence, it delivers a supple ride both in the city and on the highway. However, this is not the type of car that will handle sharp turns and twists with precision. But, to be fair, the E-QM5 is designed to be driven sensibly in the city and is not a performance-oriented vehicle in any way.

The Hongqi E-QM5 runs on a single permanent magnet synchronous motor that generates 140 kW (188 hp) of maximum power. Feeding its electric motor is a 54-kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate battery that offers an NEDC driving range of up to 431 km. This executive sedan comes mated to a single-speed automatic transmission system and is equipped with three driving modes: Economy, Standard, and Comfort. 

That said, this sedan feels surprisingly peppy off the line. Its electric powertrain offers smooth, instantaneous power delivery, allowing you to perform quick overtakes on free-flowing highways. Its range is also more than enough for everyday city driving. However, it is best to plan carefully before taking this sedan on your out-of-town trips with friends or family.

In terms of safety, the Hongqi E-QM5 is equipped with front collision warning, an uphill assist, an auto hold function, brake energy recovery, tyre pressure monitoring, multiple airbags, as well as a reversing camera.

This executive sedan comes with front ventilated disc brakes and rear regular disc brakes. Its braking setup is also supported by an anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, a traction control system, an electronic stability program, and a brake assist, among others.

In my opinion, the Hongqi E-QM5 is a game-changer in its segment. For an executive EV sedan priced under the 2M mark, it offers both everyday practicality and a premium experience on the road. That said, it definitely deserves more attention from the local consumers moving forward.
