First launched in 2001, the current XRM has undergone a lot of changes. The XRM is essentially a dual sport – at home off the road and on it. Combine this with an affordable price and Honda build quality and practicality. No wonder it is so popular in the Philippines. Because of its ubiquity, it has developed a very strong fan following along with a dedicated customizing scene. Honda sells the XRM under three very similar variants. There is the base DS that gets knuckle guards, the all black DSX and the alloy wheeled Motard more suited for urban roads. The one we are discussing here is the XRM125 DSX.
While its ambition seems to be surpassing the Super Cub in sales, its styling takes cues from the CRF 250. Especially in the headlight, the stickers on the side panels, the huge front fender, and the knuckle guards. The plastics are durable while still having a quality feel to them. The DSX even gets red brake calipers. The dimensions are compact at 1902 mm (L) x 805 mm (W) x 1072 mm (H). Handlebars are high for better control over rough terrain with a slightly higher seat height at 776 mm. The short 1239 mm wheelbase also helps in keeping the 99 kg motorcycle stable.
The wheels are large at 2.50 - 17 M/C 33L in the front and 2.50 - 17 M/C 38L in the rear. They also have spokes in the more off-road focused models. This allows them to absorb the rough terrain even better. The seats are comfortable as is the suspension with its long travel making it very accommodating on the Philippines’ roads but, only for the single rider. Its lightweight nature with the torque makes it a breeze on city roads. For better off-roadability, the XRM has a more upright riding stance. Wide handlebars and short wheelbase mean that it is very easy to carve through any kind of terrain.
The engine is a reliable 124.8cc overhead cam producing peak power of 9.25 hp at 7500 rpm. Peak torque is pretty decent at 10.4 Nm at 5000 rpm. This low down grunt means that the XRM DSX can easily go where there are no roads to be found. Off the road is where this bike really shines with its knobby tires, forgiving suspension and relaxed riding position. The thin tires become a bit handful on the road. But the wide handlebars allow the rider to control the turning radius and lean angle effortlessly. Thanks to the fuel injection the mileage is also quite good at 55 kmpl.
For a commuter which also holds the off-roading capability, it is essential that it can stop immediately while also allowing the rider to control their speed of descent. Thankfully the XRM has disc brakes in both front and rear. Being a Honda, it also comes with some extremely ergonomic and practical utilities. The underseat storage area is spacious.
