3 big reasons to like the Jaecoo J5 EV

The Jaecoo J5 EV has officially entered the local market via its official launch at the recently concluded 10th Philippine International Motor Show. 

For those who are not in the know, this is the fully-electric version of the J5 platform and the brand’s second-ever electric vehicle (EV) offering in the local market. Technically speaking, it is Jaecoo’s first-ever electric crossover, since its other model, the EJ6, is built like a rugged sport utility vehicle (SUV) with tangible off-road capabilities. 

On that note, those looking for an EV crossover have another option to consider when shopping around. There’s also the fact that electrified crossovers in general are a hot commodity in the local market right now, and having a new, fresh nameplate outright reinforces the brand’s position in this fast-growing segment.

Notable performance, range

As far as all-electric performance goes, the Jaecoo J5 EV is on par with plenty of other all-electric crossovers in the market right now. 

At maximum, its front-wheel single permanent magnet synchronous motor can produce up to 207 horsepower (hp) and 288 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. These figures mean it can hold its own against the Dongfeng Vigo EV (163 hp) and the MG 4 EV Standard (170 hp). Plus, it only makes slightly less than the Kia EV5 (217 hp), while having a more accessible price tag. 

Notably, these figures translate to a zero to 100 kilometers per hour time of 7.7 seconds. In terms of range, the Jaecoo J5 EV can cover up to 461 kilometers (km) according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). 

Topping up the J5 EV can be done via alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) ports. When using its DC port, charging up from 30-80 percent battery levels is done in just 28 minutes. 

As expected, the model also comes with the usual EV accouterments like a vehicle-to-load (V2L) system and a regenerative braking system. This Jaecoo nameplates V2L, however, is touted as “best-in-class” as it can provide up to 3.3 kilowatts (kW) of power. This will become useful for those wanting to acquire a J5 EV for outdoor activities, or as a backup during (all too common) brownouts. 

Stopping power for the Jaecoo J5 EV is provided by front and rear disc brakes. It also comes with a front MacPherson strut suspension and a multi-link rear suspension system. 

Lots of creature comforts, driving amenities

Considering its price and size, the Jaecoo J5 EV offers a lot of amenities. This, of course, is another big reason to lean towards this compact crossover. 

For starters, the Jaecoo J5 EV’s five-seater layout is equipped with leather upholstery. This goes together with soft-touch surfaces for its interior door cards and instrument panel. 

To keep everyone inside cool, the J5 EV comes standard with automatic climate control and a ventilation function for the front seats. The model also gets a 480-liter default trunk space, which is more than enough for daily tasks and short road trips. This can be expanded further thanks to fold flat rear seats and a total of 38 cargo compartments spread all around the vehicle. Plus, the model features a washable 35-liter front trunk that is touted to work great with holding chilled beverages and pet supplies. 

Other noteworthy amenities present on the Jaecoo J5 EV include a panoramic sunroof, dual-layer acoustic glass, and a multi-color ambient lighting system. 

For on-board entertainment and navigation, the model gets a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The said screen is linked to an eight-piece Sony speaker set. Topping up devices, meanwhile, can be done via USB or a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Apart from its interior, the Jaecoo J5 EV also has a well-equipped exterior that’s brimming with style. Sure, the model looks similar to the J5 HEV, but it gets a closed-off front grille equipped with active aerodynamic bits. 

Moreover, the model comes with LED lighting fixtures, automatic headlamp functionality, power-fold/adjust side mirrors, a power tailgate, roof rails, and a set of 18-inch alloy wheels. 

Furthermore, the model comes with a long list of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic braking, traffic jam assist, emergency lane-keeping, active speed limiter, and a multi-collision braking system, among others. 

Affordability

One of the most attractive elements of the Jaecoo J5 EV is its affordability. As of its introduction, it retails for P1.4 million, which is well below that of many of its local competitors. 

Moreover, Jeacoo’s local arm plans to introduce a Comfort variant, touted as more accessible in terms of price. 

Maintaining a Jaecoo J5 EV will also be relatively affordable thanks to its strong warranty coverage. These include a seven-year or 200,000-km bumper-to-bumper warranty and an eight-year or 160,000-km battery and electric motor warranty.
