A tale of two sibling crossovers: Raize vs. Corolla Cross
When the local gearheads got wind that the Toyota Raize was arriving in the Philippines, well, that wind quickly turned into a storm.

The Raize is more compact than the Corolla Cross, but both vehicles feature a comparable ride height and advanced safety features.After all, we all know what the Toyota badge stands for and why it's the people's choice — and when the brand appears in the cutthroat subcompact crossover segment for the first time, surely there'll be blood.
Other carmakers and the buying public will surely keep a wary and excited eye open for the Raize.
Part of the Raize's appeal is that it offers more beyond its badge. When the Raize was launched in Japan in 2019, with several ASEAN countries following soon after, Toyota touted the small crossover's newfound tech, as well as the toys expected in a vehicle in this class.
This advanced tech comes in the form of the powertrain combination, a one-liter, three-cylinder engine — which is borrowed from the Wigo, but with an added turbo — and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Toyota said the Raize is its first product to use such a combo, and boasted that it achieves the performance and fuel-efficiency of a 1.5-liter engine. The CVT is said to use belt and gear drives at high speeds for improved transmission efficiency.
In the Japanese market, the Raize pairs its one-liter turbo with all-wheel drive alongside the standard front rollers. Called the Dynamic Torque Control 4WD, this system sends power to the rear wheels should they slip.
With 4WD and decent ground clearance, the small crossover is looking to be like a bonafide SUV. Adding to the Raize's SUV look is its boxy posturing, which can be finished in two-tone paint jobs of bright colors over black.
In terms of equipment, the Raize is sure to attract buyers with its digital driver- and touchscreen displays, and a wealth of advanced safety features.
The pricing of the Raize ranges from P746,000 to P1.036 million, with the turbo-engine equipped car being the range-topper, and the 1.2-liter versions comprising the lower end.
The Raize's pricing slots it below the Corolla Cross, a compact crossover that's also been bringing tech to the tall-car party since 2020.
Aside from carrying the popular Corolla nameplate, the Corolla Cross is also equipped with Toyota's famous hybrid powertrain.
To motivate the Corolla Cross in the most fuel-saving and emission-lowering way, the car's 1.8-liter gasoline engine works with a battery and electric motors. The three available driving modes, EV, Power, and Eco, all help in the Corolla Cross' green mobility advocacy.
The Corolla Cross is as conscious to the environment as to its occupants, too, with its Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). This suite of safety aids include: automatic high beam, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and the pre-collision system, among others.
Of course, all of these tech comes with an SUV-like ride height and ground clearance.
