Great Wall Motor (GWM) Philippines unleashed the latest iteration of the Cannon, which is dubbed the best-selling pickup truck in China, not too long ago. 

With its sights aimed at disrupting the segment, the company’s Philippine wing looks to stir things up by expanding its presence in the country and spreading the word about how reliable and durable its offering is. 

And since the GWM Cannon is a model you will surely see and hear more of in the future, we’re going to take a quick look at its two available variants in the Philippines — to help potential buyers make the right choice, should they consider picking it over its competitors. 

But before we start, here are the pickup truck’s measurements:

Lux 4x4 

The GWM Cannon Lux 4x4 now sits as the base variant for the nameplate after GWM Philippines decided to drop the model’s 4x2 configuration. That said, those looking to drive the truck home can expect a decent set of appointments to come with the said trim. 

Exterior 

Outside, the GWM Cannon Lux 4x2 gets a suite of LED illumination. The headlamps are equipped with an automatic function and can be adjusted electronically. Also found in its fascia are daytime running lights and a pair of fog lamps. 

To its sides are decent-sized running boards and a set of 18-inch diamond-cut wheels wrapped with 265/60 radial tires. It also offers power side mirrors with integrated turn signals. 

At the back, the truck gets a bed with a spray-on bedliner, LED taillamps, a high-mount brake lamp, fog lamps, and a hydraulically-assisted tailgate with a retractable step. 

Interior 

Stepping inside the cabin, the GWM Cannon Lux 4x4 welcomes the driver with seats covered in leather. Speaking of which, both the driver’s and front passenger’s seats can be adjusted manually, with the former having a six-way adjustment setting and the latter a four-way setup. 

Grip on the steering wheel feels good with leather material. Past it is a seven-inch digital instrument cluster that adds a dash of modern flair to the truck’s interior. It is complemented by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto connected to a six-speaker sound system. 

Keeping passengers cool is an automatic air conditioning unit with rear vents, a feature good to have during hot weather.

Juicing up gadgets won’t be a problem because the GWM Cannon Lux 4x4 packs a standard wireless charger and USB ports for those occupying the front and rear seats. 

Powertrain, chassis 

Under the hood of the GWM Cannon Lux 4x2 is a 2.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. In unison, the powertrain unit generates the following figures:

The abovementioned numbers are accompanied by four drive modes that help tailor the performance of the truck depending on the terrain. Below are the said functions:

Equipped with an intelligent four-wheel drive drivetrain with torque-on-demand, the GWM Cannon Lux 4x4 offers added capability to conquer almost any challenge. 

Halts and deceleration are handled by ventilated disc brakes, front and back. Chassis support is facilitated by a double wishbone arrangement at the fore and a leaf spring rigid axle setup at the rear. 

Safety 

Ensuring driver and passenger safety is a suite of technologies that comes with the base variant. The GWM Cannon Lux 4x4’s features include the following:

Kicking things up a notch is the GWM Cannon SLux 4x4. It adds some notable appointments to the pickup truck, which are aimed at improving driver and passenger comfort as well as safety. 

Exterior 

The GWM Cannon SLux 4x4 builds on the features of the base variant but adds some useful technologies.

For example, the electronically adjustable side mirrors with repeaters now have an automatic folding function. This is helpful, especially when parking in tight spaces to save the outside mirrors from scratches. 

Interior 

More upgrades can be found in the cabin of the GWM Cannon SLux 4x4. 

The seats, which are upholstered in plush leather, can be adjusted electronically. 

In addition, occupants are now treated to ambient lighting as well as improved charging features, which come in the form of a 50-watt wireless charger. 

Further, it gets an automatic anti-glare rearview mirror.

Powertrain, chassis 

The GWM SLux 4x4 shares the same setup as the base level model with a 2.4-liter diesel mill and a nine-speed automatic transmission. 

Its suspension and brake system, too, are similar, so the trucks both enjoy a water wading depth of 800 meters, as well as a payload and towing capacity of 1,050 and 3.5 tons, respectively. 

The company’s literature notes that the range-topping model gets an electronic rear axle differential lock, which apparently is a feature missed by the entry-level grade. 

Safety 

A major bump in the nameplate’s safety features can be seen with the GWM SLux 4x4. While it retains the technologies of the Lux trim, those looking to take home the SLux grade can expect to have the following driving nannies:
