Here are BYD’s hybrid offerings in PH

BYD Cars Philippines has established itself as one of the leading brands in the local new-energy vehicle segment. 

And since the company seems to be shifting its focus from all-electric models to hybrid vehicles, here is a quick look at the cars that make up its electrified roster. 

But before we jump into the automobiles themselves, let’s take a second and understand how the company’s hybrid system works. 

DM-i technology 

The BYD brand has an intelligent take on hybrid powertrains with its Dual Mode-intelligent (DM-i) system. 

Compared to the traditional hybrid setup, BYD’s DM-i powertrains use an electric vehicle (EV)-first approach and instead employ a 1.5-liter gasoline engine as a backup generator — aka “range extender” — for its permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). 

Instead of relying on the engine to drive the vehicle, it lets the electric motors do the work. As a result, it inherits EV characteristics such as quick acceleration, near-instantaneous torque, and clean propulsion. 

Once the running battery charge is depleted, the combustion engine activates to charge the BYD Blade battery pack. 

Now that we’re familiar with BYD’s DM-i technology, let’s go over some of the models that use the said hybrid powertrain arrangement: 

BYD Tang DM-i 

The BYD Tang DM-i is one of the latest nameplates to adopt the said hybrid technology. 

To note, the BYD Tang originally had a full EV powertrain. 

Packing the usual combo, the BYD Tang DM-i has an electric motor situated at the front wheel axle. A 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline mill supplies added power to the system and produces the following numbers: 

Maximum power output (in horsepower [hp>)	267
Maximum torque (in Newton-meters [Nm>)	315

With electric power alone, the BYD Tang DM-i is able to drive up to 110 kilometers (km). Adding the range extender to the equation, it can go up to 1,160 km. 

The hybrid drivetrain allows the vehicle to zoom from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour (kph) in 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 200 kph.

Under its hood is the same DM-i system, but with a lower power output and a higher torque production. Here are its performance figures:

Range-wise, it can go up to 105 km in full EV mode and 1,100 km with the range extender in play.

BYD Cars Philippines also slapped the DM-i system into a sedan and produced the Seal 5 DM-i. 

Since the hybrid powertrain is now nestled in a more compact, lower vehicle, the power dynamics have changed. Here’s how much “oomph” it produces now:

The sedan reaches zero to 100 kph in 7.3 seconds and achieves a top speed of 185 kph. 

When it comes to range, the four-door, five-seater can drive up to 115 km on electric power alone, with the range going as far as 1,240 km with the help of the generator.

From a standstill, the compact SUV speeds to 1000 kph in 8.3 seconds with speed peaking at 170 kph.

Last on the list is the BYD Shark 6 DMO. It uses a different setup than the aforementioned hybrids in such a way that it uses two PMSMs and offers would-be owners an all-wheel drive experience — as DMO stands for Dual-Mode Off-Road. 

It still has a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that acts as a generator for providing power to the battery pack used by the two electric motors. 

That said, it will use more energy but give off more power as a trade-off. Here’s what we mean:

Acceleration from zero to 100 kph is at 5.7 seconds, with top speed reaching up to 160 kph.
