Aston Martin 800 hp electric car, Coming Soon
MANILA: After Tesla, Aston Martin is next in line to come up with an all-electric sports car. The long-time British automobile maker is in full preparation to bring an electric version of its four-door saloon Rapide. Dr. Andy Palmer, CEO Aston Martin, said that the new electric variant will be introduced by 2017.
The announcement was made on Sunday, at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, wherein the company talked about its future plans to produce an all-electric version of the DBX crossover in addition to the electric Rapide. With this confirmation, Palmer ended the long-time speculation of an electric Aston that cropped up in April this year.
Though, the engine specs were not revealed at the event, but we can expect an electric Rapide that will run on an all-wheel drive, with a power output of 800 hp. The new Aston will be motivated by batteries sourced from “established suppliers” like LG and Samsung while Panasonic didn't feature in the list. Talking about its production sheet that will be limited to hundred cars annually, but for now the company is ready with a test mule of the car.
One prominent reason supporting this novel shift to electric cars includes the want to continue with the V-8 and V-12 engines, as the future holds great scope for the emission-free models. Secondly, with its new car, Aston is planning to give a tough competition to Tesla's powerful Model S that currently holds a good amount of market share.
Aston doesn't seem to stop here, its long list of future plans includes a four-door all-electric DBX. The crossover coupe is expected to debut around 2020 as a plug-in hybrid, and later a gasoline model which is followed by an all-electric variant. A two-door DBX is also on the cards, as hinted by the Aston.
To be priced at around $200,000 to $250,000, the all-new electric Rapide is rightly said, “something beyond a pure technology play.”
