Check out MG 5 Prestige’s similarly-priced rivals in PH

Several automotive media outlets and personalities in the Philippines have repeatedly said that crossovers are now the dominant segment in the market. This is true, but apparently, the sedan segment is still alive and well. Thriving even.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the price of the MG 5 Prestige?

The MG 5 Prestige retails at P888,888.
  • What is the engine and transmission of the MG 5 Prestige?

The MG 5 Prestige uses a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine paired with a continuously variable transmission.
  • This is apparent from the sheer volume of these cars still seen on local roads. In recent years, the local scene also saw a healthy number of sedan launches, with the latest being the MG5 Prestige at the 2026 Manila International Auto Show

In a way, however, most sedans that fall below the P1 million mark are seen as affordable yet droll conveyances for the A-to-B grind. The MG 5 Prestige, however, has sought to break the mold with its abundance of features that are commonly seen on higher-end sedans.

That sounds good, but what models is the MG 5 Prestige facing in the local market? What are its similarly-priced alternatives?

We’ll list them down here, but first, let’s check out what this all-new sedan model is offering.

    MG 5 Prestige

The MG 5 Prestige is technically an update of the MG 5 sedan. Otherwise, it is now sold alongside its older version as a top-spec trim.

Pricing for the said MG model, however, is set at P888,888 - making it a highly accessible alternative to many other subcompacts in the market right now.

For propulsion, the MG 5 Prestige uses a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) sending power to its front wheels. At its maximum, this setup can produce 108 horsepower (hp) and 142 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque

Style-wise, the MG 5 Prestige goes for a sleek look with some measure of sportiness. It features a pair of sharp LED headlamps (with LED daytime running lamps), a reasonably sized grille, and a relatively smooth side section with a chrome strip along the window line. Its rear section, meanwhile, features a pair of Y-shaped LED taillights and a faux diffuser with carbon-fiber-style trim.

Other noteworthy exterior features of the MG 5 Prestige include an electronic sunroof, automatic headlamp functionality, power-adjustable side mirrors with heating, and a yet of 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels.

Size-wise, the model is 4,607 millimeters (mm) long, 1,818 mm wide, and 1,489 mm in height. Its wheelbase spans 2,680 mm, and it has a ground clearance of 118 mm.

Inside the model is a five-seater layout equipped with an electronic manual air-conditioning system, foldable rear seats, and leather upholstery. On-board entertainment, meanwhile, is handled by a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Here are the other noteworthy interior amenities available on the MG 5 Prestige:

    • 3.5-inch TFT digital display with analog gauges
    • Electronic parking brake
    • Front cabin armrest
    • Push-to-start button
    • Tilt-adjust steering column
    • USB ports
    • Keyless entry
    • Manual-adjust front seats
    • Six-piece speaker set
    • 12-volt accessory outlet

Safety-wise, the MG 5 Prestige comes standard with four airbags, anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, rear parking camera, rear parking sensors, ISOFIX, and an anti-theft system.

    Toyota Vios XE

The Toyota Vios is arguably one of the most popular sedan models in the Philippine market. On this note, the model’s XLE CVT trim directly competes with the MG 5 Prestige. The automatic variant of the XLE, after all, retails at P908,000 - a mere P19,112 more compared to the MG offering.

For its engine, the Toyota Vios XLE CVT uses a 1.5-liter four-cylinder that produces up to 97 hp and 123 Nm of torque. The said engine, as the trim’s name implies, uses a CVT. And yes, the Vios is also a front-wheel-drive (FWD) model.

Style-wise, the Toyota Vios XLE is the “ubiquitous” sedan of the Philippine market. It does not reinvent the wheel when it comes to style, but it has a very recognizable silhouette adorned with a black-colored grille, wide halogen headlamps, and a sculpted hood.

Apart from what was already mentioned, the Vios XLE’s exterior was kitted out with halogen taillights, a fin-type antenna, power-adjust side mirrors, and a set of 15-inch alloy wheels.

When it comes to size, the model measures 4,420 mm long, 1,730 mm wide, and 1,475 mm high. It also has a wheelbase length of 2,550 mm and a ground clearance of 133 mm.

Like its rivals, the Toyota Vios XLE is a five-seater. It has fabric seats, a manual air-conditioning system, and an analog gauge set. These go together with a tilt-adjustable steering column, a hand-operated parking brake, and a turn-key ignition system.

Sitting on the Vios XLE’s dashboard is an eight-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The said screen is linked to a four-piece speaker set, while charging device inside the car is done through USB ports or a 12-volt accessory outlet.

Safety-wise, the Toyota Vios XLE CVT comes with dual front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, anti-lock braking, ISOFIX, hill-start assist, stability control, rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, and a security system.

    Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLS

Likewise situated in the same price range as the MG 5 Prestige is the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLS. As of this writing, this sedan retails at P937,000, which is P48,112 more than the MG model.

For its engine, the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLS utilizes a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with a peak output of 76 hp and 100 Nm of torque. Power is sent to its front wheels via a CVT.

Style-wise, the model gets a modernized front end courtesy of an update it received back in 2020. Its front fascia borrows styling cues for its larger Mitsubishi siblings, coupled with a redesigned pair of halogen headlamps. These go together with a high-riding side portion and a relatively “quiet-looking” but functional rear end.

Some key exterior features of the Mirage G4 GLS include a set of 15-inch wheels, LED headlamps, front fog lamps, LED taillights, LED daytime running lamps, and power-adjustable side mirrors.

Size-wise, the GLS variant of the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is 4,305 mm long, 1,670 mm wide, and 1,515 mm in height. It also has a 2,550 mm wheelbase and a ground clearance of 170 mm.

The top-spec Mitsubishi Mirage G4's driving amenities include a tilt-adjustable steering column, a manual lever-type parking brake, a push-to-start button, and analog gauge clusters. All seats inside, meanwhile, are manually-adjustable and clad in black fabric.

Other interior features of the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLS include, but are not limited to:

    • Manual air-conditioning
    • 12-volt accessory outlet
    • USB charging port
    • Seven-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
    • Four-piece speaker set

For safety, the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLS comes standard with dual front airbags, anti-lock braking, a reverse camera, ISOFIX, a keyless entry system, hill-start assist, and stability control.

    Final thoughts

To sum it all up, the MG 5 Prestige, despite being more affordable than its two popular competitors listed above, simply has more features. This is on top of the fact that its engine also generates more power than its rivals.

On that note, the MG sedan nameplate could be an attractive buy for those looking for more from a sub-P1 million sedan.

So, if you like what you see in the MG 5 Prestige, do not hesitate to visit the nearest Morris Garages (MG) Motor Philippines and ask for a test drive.
