Auto China 2024: Mercedes-Benz highlights electric G-Class SUV

BEIJING: Mercedes-Benz has brought the G 580 with EQ Technology at the ongoing Auto China 2024. 

The battery-electric luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) is equipped with an advanced electric drive system that aims to set new standards in performance and off-road capability. It also has four individually controlled electric motors and a range of exclusive off-road technologies, which the German car brand believes will usher an exciting new era for the nameplate. 

Per Mercedes-Benz, the all-electric G-Class SUV model uses a 116 kilowatt-hour high-voltage lithium-ion battery that sends power to the four individually controlled motors located near the wheels. 

The said electric motors are integrated into the ladder frame and develop a total maximum power output of some 579 horsepower with 1,164 Newton-meters of torque. 

Other notable features of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class battery-electric vehicle include its virtual differential locks (via torque vectoring), its unique driving modes (G-Turn, G-Steering, and intelligent off-road crawl function), the G-Roar sound experience (generates various driving sounds), and its MercedesBenz User Experience infotainment system. 

The all-electric G-Class made its debut in China at a dedicated event in Beijing’s Art District 798. 

Aside from the Mercedes-Benz G 580, the Stuttgart-headquartered auto firm also presented the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance (which debuted during the Formula 1 weekend in Shanghai), CLA Class concept car, an updated EQS, a long wheelbase version of the E-Class, and the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and GLS Night Series.  

The debut of the abovementioned models in China is a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to the Chinese market.

That’s why we continue to invest in China, expand our R&D (research and development) and industrial footprint and accelerate the transformation towards electrification, digitalization, and carbon neutrality.” Mercedes-Benz Group Chairman of the Board of Management Ola Kallenius said.
