Bentley Flying Spur showcases groundbreaking 3D wood rear door trim
MANILA: Bentley has just premiered a trailblazing, new three-dimensional wood rear door trim, specifically for the all-new Flying Spur.
As it is regarded a world-first for the automobile industry, three-dimensional wood involves an impressive, diamond-shaped pattern improved with a three-dimensional surface finish integrated directly into the wood.
The new option is considered as one of the distinct veneer choices from the Bentley Mulliner Collections. It creates a modern luxury design statement, delivering tangibility to the natural appeal of wood.
Specialized technical craftsmen produced and developed the three-dimensional wood over 18 months before Bentley Mulliner was able to make the challenging concept a reality.
The three-dimensional wood components are not constructed using veneers since it is commonly applied to the waist rails and fascia.
To attain the three-dimensional surface, expert operators were able to do wood carving using a multi-axis routing machine to a tolerance of 0.1mm, which is less than the thickness of human hair.
The cuts are hand-finished to achieve the ideal results. An open-pore lacquer is also added, enabling the real texture and color of the wood to be emphasized for a more natural and exquisite appearance.
Every rear door and quarter panel is manually crafted from a single block of sustainable American Cherry or American Walnut timber, taking into consideration the pleasant combination of the latest technology and conventional skills.
Bentley chooses the finest timbers, as it takes into account the absence of resin inclusions or knots through the entire depth of the wood.
Only the two types of timber mentioned provide a seamless finish and striking grain, along with warm color and natural texture to match the supreme Flying Spur cabin.
The “B surface” or rear of the log is processed to complement a die-cast aluminum door panel template. The timber is connected to the template before the assembly is put back into the machine. The “A surface” or front, on the other hand, is sliced into its three-dimensional form.
The idea for the 3D-machined wood was first demonstrated in the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car of Bentley during the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, which gained global recognition. Its unique features were inspired by the type of leather that was used for the diamond-quilted aspects in the Mulliner Driving Specification interior suite of the auto brand.
The all-new Bentley Flying Spur is the definitive luxury Grand Touring sedan, as it holds the ideal combination of exceptional four-door, limousine-style comfort, and performance-oriented swiftness.
This Bentley flagship model has launched a new generation of luxury mobility, specifically designed to benefit both passengers and drivers.
With its aggressive and thrilling presence on the road, the all-new Flying Spur features revolutionary technology and an exquisite cabin, custom-designed in the first carbon-neutral luxury car facility in the world.
