BYD Cars PH debuts all-new Tang DM-i

MANILA: BYD Cars Philippines has launched the all-new Tang dual mode-intelligent (DM-i) plug-in hybrid mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV)

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much horsepower and torque can the BYD Tang DM-i produce?

The all-new BYD Tang DM-i can produce up to 267 horsepower and 315 Newton-meters of torque.
  • How many people can fit inside the BYD Tang DM-i?

The BYD Tang DM-i can accommodate up to seven occupants, including the driver.
  • With a starting price of P2.098 million, BYD’s local arm touts the all-new three-row model as a well-balanced ride in terms of safety, comfort, space, and performance. But what does the BYD Tang DM-i offer its would-be adopters? Let’s find out here.

    Powertrain, performance

While sharing a name with the all-electric BYD Tang, the Tang DM-i PHEV utilizes a new platform especially designed to accommodate its 1.5-liter turbocharged powertrain, permanent magnet synchronous motor, and its 21.5-kilowatt-hour (kWh) Blade battery.

Like other DM-i nameplates, such as the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, the all-new Tang DM-i was equipped with a direct current (DC) and an alternating current (AC) port. The model’s DC port provides fast charging capabilities, which can increase its battery state-of-charge from 30-80 percent in just 30 minutes. Additionally, the model has a vehicle-to-load feature, as well as regenerative braking.

At maximum, the BYD model’s PHEV system can generate up to 267 horsepower (hp) and 315 Newton-meters of torque. Power is sent to its front wheels via an electronically continuously variable transmission (eCVT).

Thanks to its battery, the model is capable of covering up to 110 kilometers (km) while exclusively using its electric vehicle (EV) mode. Its total extended range, meanwhile, clocks in at 1,160 km, according to BYD’s local arm. The model can also accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour (kph) in 7.5 seconds.

For the BYD Tang DM-i, ride quality and stability are ensured by a MacPherson strut for the front and a multi-link rear suspension system. Stopping power, on the other hand, is provided by disc brakes for all four wheels.

Here’s a table summarizing the basic mechanical specs of the BYD Tang DM-i:

Style-wise, the BYD Tang DM-i wears a more imposing version of the signature design language that’s already in use on the Seal 5 DM-i. Specifically, it boasts a sharp nose equipped with a sizeable grille that’s surrounded by sharply contrasting colored details.

Flanking its grille are a pair of sharp-looking LED headlamp clusters. It also has roof rails, a generously tall greenhouse, and black plastic claddings on the wheel arches and side sills.

The rear of the mid-size model, however, comes with a quieter overall look. It does get some stylish faux side vents on its rear bumper, a roof-mounted spoiler, and an eye-catching LED taillight bar, but its diffuser and tailgate land on the elegant side.
